The association soon became known as the "bullet club" because its members shot skeet and deer on their property. The club also sponsored annual rifle matches between residents of Escondido and San Diego County. In 1875, Escondido became an incorporated city with its own police department. As a result, bullets no longer had to be transported through the city by boat or train to reach other parts of California. The city also began manufacturing its own Bullets (later renamed Winchester Ammunition).
