Escondido, California is a small city in San Diego County, California. The population was 83,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Diego County and has been since 1873. With an area of only 2 square miles (5 km2), Escondido was once one of the smallest cities in America. The first Europeans to visit Escondido were Spanish missionaries who established Mission Santa Cruz de la Laguna on December 7, 1769. In 1821, Mexican land grants were authorized for residents of mission lands east of Rancho Rinconada that included what is now Escondido City and much of today's north side including Harbor Springs Village and Point Loma. The town site was selected by lottery on November 15, 1827; construction began on July 16th following approval from Mexico City officials The Townsite Act ordained that "the said place be named after Commodore James Hulse" – an early settler and future Naval officer – who had played a leading role in saving American forces from capture during the Peninsular War (1809-1813). Commodore Hulse's namesake street forms part of Avenida de los Angeles which runs through downtown San Diego In 1836, when gold was discovered nears Escondidos waterfront by prospectors George Hearn and Augustus Kelley alias "Don Carlos", development along Isla Mesa began with building taverns for travelers coming ashore for supplies or minerals seekers looking for strikeable gold nuggets offshore A new wharf was built ashore enabling steamboats landing passengers at various points inland including Visitacion Valley where today's Don Julio Park stands When railroad engineers arrived in late 19th century they found no suitable spot available for their new terminal other than Point Loma so they called attention to waterfront property between Callahan Road & Katella Avenue They leased Wharf #1 from Samuel Wilcox who used it as his private anchorage until he sold it to Captain John Sloat Jr., headmaster at Mission Hills School District No 1 just before passage of laws authorizing statehood on February 14th 1860 . When this happened Captains Sloat & Townsend decided to establish themselves permanently rather then go through all the hassle & paperwork formalizing their incorporation etc so they Doomed themselves by sitting idle while others took advantage! When finally incorporated they did not have any wharves but instead leased several adjacent plots located at present day Soquel Way/Alvarado Street & Solana Beach Boulevard) Commodore James Hulse Streets still run down 'old'en Avenida de los Angeles
