Escondido, California is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. It is named after the Spanish word "escoñidera," meaning "shoreline." The city was founded on October 15, 1885 by John W. Riley and his brother Charles B. Riley as a summer community on the shore of Point Loma. The name Escondido comes from the Spanish word "esconder" or to hide. In 1916, ammunition manufacturer Winchester Ammunition Company began production of what would become the world's first self-loading rifle ammunition. They produced three types of this ammo: 6mm Remington (SST), 7mm Mauser (Winchester Model 1897), and .30 Remington (7mm magnum). These cartridges were chambered for rifles that used either 12 gauge (.410 caliber) shotgun shells or 20 gauge (.220 caliber) rifle shells. In 1932, Winchester introduced their first pistol ammunition using self-loading mechanisms - their 7mm Mauser SST cartridge became the first handgun cartridge to be self-loaderable with a revolver trigger system! The popularity of handguns led to increased demand for reloading supplies for those guns - including Winchester Ammunition Co.'s own limited edition brass cases made only for pistols! In 1935, Winchester Manufacturing Company merged with American Arms Corporation in order to create one of America's leading firearms manufacturers. At this time Winchester also introduced its new small-game round called White Eagle which was designed specifically for game hunting and target shooting use; it remained an important product until it was discontinued in 1972 due to competition from more modern technologies! During World War II, Escondido became home to many naval gunnery ranges as local businesses supplied munitions needed by both Axis and Allied forces fighting in Europe. portions of Escondido were destroyed during World War II but have since been reconstructed and are now known as Century City Boulevard
