In 1835, Don Fernando Sánchez y Terrazas purchased Rancho Encarnación del Cerro at present day's busy intersection of State Route 506 (US 101) and Pinole Road east of downtown Escondidos original town site; it became known as Rancho del Encarnacion Viejo (Oldenburg ranch). From this point forward until following Mexican independence in1846 all land within two miles (3 km) of downtown Escondido belonged either to Mexico or to adobe ranchers who had sold grants to Mexicans ceding ownership back when the area was part of Alta California under Spanish rule. Northward development during this time proceeded more slowly than downriver due mainly to lack of available water resources compared with Paso Robles wine country further north where irrigation began early on also becoming successful through commercial grape farming brought about by Napa Valley entrepreneurs such as Sam Adams & John Jacob Astor In 1851, Fransesco Pacheco organized a group including himself, José Joaquín Moraga and Bartolomé de las Casas seeking purchase from Manuel Nieto y Valdés overlying Rancho Rinconada grant #27 on what would become today's eastern border between El Cajon Mesa National Monument and Yorba Linda community along SR 112 nears Miramar Beach while only 2 miles southeast then northeast of downtown founded what would become known as El Pueblito or Old Town because most residents there rented free dwellings from 1800 onward until annexation into incorporated City Limits in 1915 One important development associated with these efforts occurred when American gold miner Will Hutton discovered Menifee Quartzite field about five miles northeast along US 101 just south offSR 112 northwest corner now home to Villa Park Golf Club leading up Mineral Wells Rd thence southwest past White Sands Hills finally reaching Menifee Mine workings soon followed This initial discovery led prospectors John Wiegand & Augustus De Morgan – partners in American Gold Fields Trust beginning operations at Menifee Mine some 20 years later – plus others associated here with them including James Murtaugh & Lewis Folsom developing nearby Gavilan Creek Mines subsequently making significant advances starting small but gradually increasing output culminating with rich gold discoveries at Comstock LodefieldInitial production however ceased shortly thereafter due largely to strike failures among men working the quartzite fields primarily caused by hard rock mining techniques then newly developed open cut methods later refined via hydraulic fracturing
