The population of Escondido was 73,521 as of the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in San Diego County after Tijuana and the fifth most populous city in California. It is located northeast of downtown San Diego and is bordered by La Jolla to its east, Santee to its north, Solana Beach to its west, and Encinitas to its south. The first Europeans to visit Escondido were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his ship la Legazpi on October 26, 1542. The Mission Santa Fé was founded on July 16, 1835 by Father José Bautista Menéndez y Lara with land grants from King Ferdinand VII of Spain. On December 14, 1856 the town was incorporated as part of what would become San Diego County. In 1916 Escondido became an independent city when it merged with neighboring La Mesa. In 1972 it seceded from San Diego County and became an unincorporated community once again within the county limits until annexation intoSan diego by City Hall in 1998. In recent years there has been a trend towards redevelopment around Balboa Park Boulevard (formerly known as "Paseo de las Flores"), Midway Drive/Midway Avenue (formerly known as "El Camino Real"), Sunnyside Avenue (formerly known as "El Rancho") between Interstate 805 and Interstate 5 SR-1 ( formerly "Interstate 5 East"), North Torrey Pines Road/North Torrey Park Drive "(formerly) El Cajon Boulevard". I-805 runs through Escondido directly connecting downtown with both US-101 and I-15 near Downtown Vista del Lago while I-805 connects Escondidos eastern side with Imperial Valley's much larger cities including Salinas and Mexicali before ending at I-5 south of Redondo Beach. There are plans for various types of mixed use development along Balboa Park Boulevard which will include office buildings; hotels; restaurants; retail stores; public transportation options like light rail or bus lines; bike trails; parks including one that will be home to a new ballpark for the Padres' major league team as well as small businesses that may be situated next door to each other

Escondido ( pronounced /ɛksˈnædʒo/ or [eksˈnædʒi]; Spanish: Espejo de Escondido, meaning "Shrine of the Retreat"), is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 66,651 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Escondido Creek and the Santa Anita horse race track that is located adjacent to the city. The first Europeans to visit what is now Escondido were Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and his party on October 15, 1769. They named it La Jolla because they saw a harbor there—now called Town Harbor—and La Jolla Point. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo anchored at La Jolla Cove on September 14 of that year for repairs and Refreshment with hopes of finding land northward beyond Mexico City which he had heard about but never seen. However, no land was found and he returned to Spain on October 24. On December 2B Francisco Vázquez de Ayala discovered uninhabited islands in Lopez Bay off Tomales Island after sailing through that area during his exploration of what is now Marin County during his trip from Point Reyes National Seashore south down the Coast Ranges (). In 1821 José Antonio Salinas purchased Rancho San Marcos from Manuel Nieto for $6,000 (). In 1854 it was sold by Manuel Nieto's heirs to James Shields who renamed it Paso Robles () when he acquired Iturbide Rancho adjoins today's portions of Encinitas. At its peak in 1860 there were 100 families living in Escondido; by 1890 only 12 families remained ! On May 25, 1892 two earthquakes struck California - VIII magnitude (0.9) near downtown Los Angeles and IX magnitude (3.2) near Topaz Mountain just outside town limitsescandalously rupturing reservoirs beneath downtown while causing minor damage including breakage of bricks used as part of street paving; both events are still considered major earthquakes by local standards even though their epicenter was more than 20 miles away . After this event many people fled the area due to fear for their lives . One reason for this exodus may have been concerns about future tremors as related hysteria over impending natural disasters characterized some residents early post-quake years
The City of Escondido was founded on November 2, 1853 by Captain James Irvine and his men from the USS Constitution. The city's first Mayor was William H. Truman. In 1860, the City of Escondido became a County Seat with jurisdiction over all of San Diego County. In 1912,Escondido annexed part of Rancho Santa Fe which formed the nucleus for present-day Oceanside. On October 15, 1944, Escondido became an unincorporated community known as "Nile Valley".
