Established in 1853 as Rancho Encinitas, the name changed to its current designation of Encinitas in 1907 when a new town site was platted on the edge of what is now known as Imperial Valley. The original post office operated from 1855 to 1889 and again from 1911 to 1912. The first white settlers arrived in 1853, and by 1875 there were twelve families living here. In that year, rancho landowner Juan Bautista Martinez donated 2 miles (3 km) of his property east of the present-day Encinitas Townsite for a public school district with six classrooms and a library. The land grant extended westward to include much of today's San Diego County. As early as 1886, people were studying ways to bring electricity into this remote area without building an extensive new electric system. A group of local businessmen organized an effort called "The American Electric Light Company" which built lights along Military Highway (now Interstate 5) between Encinitas and Pacific Beach for passengers arriving during dark hours at nearby san Diegans ports or traveling inland for goods deliveries; these lights became operational on October 10th 1888. In 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt made Encinitas one of four townships within San Diego County so that more people could be attracted hither due to its location on the heels of La Jolla Naval Air Station's opening two years earlier. At first all but two residents lived on Paseo del Norte - then part of Rancho de la Garza - while development took place along El Cajon Boulevard just south of town center near present-day Mission Valley Airport and dairy farms north up Paseo del Norte Road until 1942 when all but one family left thanks to World War II shortages brought about by the war effort; after 1945 most life returned back to normal with only sporadic development taking place through the years until it All senses went away completely from downtownEncinitas after impacts from earthquakes in 2001-2005

By 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís had been established here and the surrounding land became part of Mexico. In 1848, America gained independence from Spain and a new country, California, was born. The Mexican government claimed all of California south of the Baja Peninsula as part of their territory. So, when American soldiers discovered Gold Mining on November 30th, 1849, they decided to claim it for America. On December 2nd, 1849, General Antonio López Cerda issued an order stating that anyone found with gold or silver coins worth more than $1 could be arrested and prosecuted as robbers! This started what is known today as the Gold Rush period in California!
