It is located on the southern edge of San Diego County and is surrounded by the cities of Torrance and La Jolla on its east side and Encinitas Mesa on its west side. The first Europeans to visit what is now Encinitas were Spanish missionaries in 1769, when they named it Isla de Culpazos after an island in Mexico that they had seen. In 1821, Rancho Santa Margarita was acquired by José María Palomar from Manuel Nieto. The area became part of Imperial Valley under Mexican rule but later became part of the United States as part of the 19th Amendment to the U.S Constitution which granted American citizens full citizenship rights. The area around Encinitas was developed for agriculture with vast areas being devoted to citrus groves and cattle ranching until World War II when large amounts of munitions were produced in nearby San Diego County. After 1945 much industry moved into the county due to new technology developments such as plastics production and shipbuilding during World War II which led to increased development around town including a burgeoning shopping mall district known as "The Villages." In 1960 Encinitas post office was moved from Balboa Park into what is today downtown because there wasn't enough room for another post office within blocks of shops and businesses only accessible by car or streetcar so this grew into what is know today as Downtown Encinitas

The city is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and it shares borders with Citrus Heights to the east and South Park to the south. In 1869, General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at Coronado Ranch after a three-year siege by American forces culminating in his capture and execution at Mariposa Grove. Mexican settlers began to arrive in earnest in the late 1870s, although some had arrived as early as 1846 when José Joaquín Hidalgo captained an expedition that discovered Baja California. The site where Encinitas now stands was chosen for its commanding position on Mission Trails 20 & 26. In 1880, gold was found near Encinitas by prospectors led by John Wesley Powell; this discovery led to heavy investment by various companies and made Encinitas one of the most important cities in Southern California during this time period. In 1902, local residents erected a sod firepole from a tree stump to commemorate their victory over Mojave Desert fever; this event became known as "The Pole." During World War II, many people from Encinitas worked on fighter planes stationed at El Centro Air Base; many were killed or injured during war service. Encinitas is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded on December 16, 1853 by James W. Encin as an agricultural community named Encinitas Mesa on the west bank of San Diego Bay. The name may be derived from the Nahuatl word "enzintli" meaning "the place where beans grow". The first post office opened in 1854 and was called Main Street; it closed in 1865. In 1876, the town became part of the newly created Imperial County and lost its status as an agricultural center due to new railroad development near Encinitas. However,Encinitas has since regained some of its former stature as a bedroom community for Menlo Park and Palo Alto. In 1919, citrus growers petitioned state officials to make Encinitas their official citrus county seat because they felt that Menlo Park bypassed them in favor of Palo Alto. Governor William Paley agreed and set aside land north of Santa Clara Avenue east of Sather Road for encrement purposes; however, no settlement ever grew there and today only a few trees remain from whenencinity had such high importance to the area's economy.
