Encinitas, California is a city located in southern San Diego County, California. The population was 890 at the 2010 census. The Encinitas area has been inhabited by the Kunitz people for over 10,000 years and the first white person to arrive in what is now Encinitas was Captain George Vancouver who landed on July 22, 1769. He named it "Nootka" after his native land of Nootka Sound in what is now British Columbia. A post office called Encinitas was established in 1876 and remained in operation until 1951. The city started as a farming community with small settlements near present-day Marine Park and Point Loma. By 1915, however, Encinitas had developed into a busy commercial center due to its proximity to naval base Naval Air Station Miramar and its location near Interstate 5 and Navy Base San Diego. In 1925, residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name of Pacific Beach. At that time the population was only 1,500 people but by 1930 it had grown to 4,000 people with 300 businesses and 400 homes. In 1952 Encinitas became an act of statehood when it merged with neighboring Del Mar Beach into the new county of San Diego; however, this merger did not take effect until 1957 because of local resistance from then-Mayor Harry Wainwright (D). On May 3rd of that year Wainwright announced he would not seek reelection after being indicted for perjury related to his role in helping create City Hall corruption charges against Mayor John D'Angelo (D). That same day citizens organized themselves into committees composed of business leaders to challenge Wainwright's election loss; these committees were successful enough that Wainwright resigned on November 2nd following a hearing before the State Assembly's Committee on Elections Systems where he admitted guilt to felony bribery charges which led to his impeachment proceedings; these proceedings ended without conviction but resulted in public embarrassment for him which helped lead D'Angelo win re-election on November 3rd despite being impeached by an Assembly committee six days earlier! On January 1st 1959 voters passed Proposition 13 which eliminated many government functions including education while creating instead an income tax exempting most property owners below certain thresholds. This change caused much concern among businesses who feared they would no longer be able to compete against private schools within their district since their customers would now have more money available than they ever could before without having their children attend those schools. However, this fear proved unfounded as most businesses quickly adapted by increasing tuition rates or moving their operations out of state altogether due To limited financial resources at that time! Encinitas, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 21,620 at the 2010 census. It is known for its wine industry and hot springs. The name Encinitas comes from an Ohlone word meaning "the place of the redwood trees." The first Europeans to visit Encinitas were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on October 8, 1542. They named it Islas Baja California because they thought the area might be accessible by sailing southward from Mexico City. In 1821, gold was discovered in nearby Hetch Hetchy Valley and Encinitas became one of the first areas to get involved in mining. It started out as a small town with only about 100 residents but soon developed into a major center for wine production and mineral rights around 1915-1916 when many large irrigation projects were completed near town to bring water from underground supplies to fields near the surface. By 1930, Encinitas had over 10,000 residents and was becoming known as one of the most important wineproducing towns in southern California. In 1932, Incandescent Light Company bought all of Rancho Santa Fe Winery's land east of I-5 (now part of USC), including what is now downtownEncinitas. They built what is now Peet’s Coffee & Tea Store on First Street between Arroyo Parkway and Old Mission Road in 1933 as their corporate headquarters while also starting up other wineries such as Riesling vineyards west of town on Corona Avenue then Sloe Gin vineyards east on Pico Boulevard (now US 101). In 1928, a dam was built on the Kern River just north of Encinitas to provide water for the city of Los Angeles. As a result, much of present day Encinitas were developed around this dam including streets and homes that were built on top of fill created from the river's excavation. The city's growth led to an increase in traffic and pollution which eventually causedencinitasto lose its status as a bedroom community for L.A.. However, over time encinitaspresently regained some of its former population with many people moving into new development in downtownEncinitas since it is now within walking distance to most shops and services.
