Encinitas, California is a small town located in San Diego County, California. The population was 16,890 at the 2010 census. The Encinitas-Mesa area has a population of over 50,000 people and covers an area of about 333 square miles. It is home to Naval Air Station Miramar and Encinitas Marine Corps Base. The history of Encinitas dates back to 1885 when Rancho Rincon de los Padres was purchased from Mission San Diego de Asistencia by James Irvine and his wife Maria del Carmen Pino. In 1907, Rincon de los Padres became part of the city of San Diego. In 1912 the Rincones were renamed Santa Fe Drive after their purchase by Major General John J. Pershing who gave them land east of present day Hillcrest Avenue in what is now Mesa Heights neighborhood on Encinitas Boulevard near Valley Road (now known as State Route 163). At that time there were just 12 houses on Santa Fe Drive which numbered one-tenth of the total number in town. In 1916 the City Council voted to annex parts of Encinitas south of US 101 because it appeared that development would take place there regardless of whether or not they annexed it into San Diego County proper; accordingly, on November 3rd 1916 the City Council annexed Rancho Rincon de los Padres into their city limits

Encinitas, California is a city located in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 31,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The city's name comes from Encinitas Creek which runs through it. The first people to live in what is now Encinitas lived along the creek and hunted game near present-day Mission Trails Regional Park. The first permanent settler in Encinitas was Captain George Dyer who built an adobe cabin on Rancho Fortunato in 1821. A year later he and his wife married into the Peralta family and brought their children over to live here. Mrs. Peralta soon died and Captain Dyer moved his family back to Mexico City where they continued ranching until 1847 when they acquired Rancho Rinconada which included most of what is now Encinitas. In 1849 they sold their rancho to Manuel Nieto who built two churches here: one called Nuestra Senora de la Esperanza (Our Lady of Hope) and another called Iglesia Católica de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Church of Our Lady of Mercy). In 1862 following Santa Ana's creation as an independent county, much of Rinconada became part of Holy Cross Parish while parts went to San Lorenzo Rey Dona Ana Church; this led to conflict between the two denominations over property rights within Encinitas proper . In 1886 a group including five families from downtown Los Angeles arrived looking for land east of Interstate 5 for a new town called Saugus after visiting other towns around Orange County with similar names such as Redondo Beach, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach but no luck finding any suitable parcels .
