The Encinitas area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three thousand years and today's residents are descendants of Mexicans who arrived in the 1820s. In 1846, Encinitas became part of the Mexican state of Baja California when that territory was split between Mexico and United States following the Mexican-American War. The city name derives from Mission San Francisco de Asís established in 1795 on land that now includes most of downtown and much of Encinitas Boulevard. In 1906, during World War I, Encinitas served as a naval airfields for strikes against Imperial German forces in Southern California coastline towns such as El Cajon and Point Loma before closing down due to wartime restrictions on military aviation. After World War II, Encinitas grew rapidly as a result of its service within Navy Naval Air Station Lemont Field with its then largest hangar which still stands today (now used by Republic Airport). The post-war period saw rapid growth in businesses related to aircraft maintenance including Lockheed Martin Aircraft Factory #1 whose production facilities were located just east of downtown Encinitas until their closure in 1978; Hughes Aircraft Company which built their first jet fighter at Lemont; McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation's parent company which built numerous warships including USS Enterprise (CVN 74), USS Midway (CVN 71), USS Lexington (CV 58) and Navy destroyer USS John S McCain (DDG 63) among many others Today's economy is based primarily on aerospace manufacturing but also includes services such as real estate development, retail trade and professional management. Encinitas, California is a small town in San Diego County, California. The population was 7,745 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The start of Encinitas’s history can be traced back to 1853 when Rancho Santa Ana Mexican land grants were given to Juan Bautista Alvarado and his brother Pio. This land included what is now Encinitas and began growing as a result of its proximity to Mission Valley on the eastern edge of San Diego County and to Tijuana on the west side. In 1883, John Sutter located a mission in present-day Encinitas and named it Nuestra Señora de la Concepción de los Dolores (Our Lady of Conception from Cathedral Heights). The Mission was originally an adobe building with twelve stories that served as the parish church for Encinitas until 1903 when a new $200,000 temple was built on land donated by Mrs. Hilda Goudreau Folsom and dedicated on October 15th, 1903. In 1916, after World War I ended, General Douglas MacArthur purchased Rincon Point Lighthouse from Captain James Irvine for $10,000USD with intentions of using it as an observation post during World War II. However due to Navy regulations at the time only military personnel could access lighthouses so MacArthur had to sell it back to Irvine four years later for $5 millionUSD; a total value today at over $100 millionUSD! After being sold by MacArthur in 1946 he used it as his home until his death in 1951 at age 94; making him one of just two people in history (the other being Admiral Chester Nimitz) who have been buried outside their home country! Today Rincon Point Lighthouse remains unoccupied but still stands proud as one of America’s most iconic landmarks! Encinitas also experienced some great growth during its early years thanks to its many industries including agriculture which would soon lead toEncinitans becoming known for world-renowned products like oranges and tomatoes. Manufacturing would continue throughout the 1940s especially during World War II when Encinitan businesses produced munitions such as planes and tanks for both Allied forces and Japan alike. By 1960 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtownEncinitas with employment totaling over 2,500 individuals! Additionallyencinitanswere beginningtobecomingknownfor their wine industry which would eventually lead them into becoming one of America’s leading wine production areas by 1990!!!
