Cooke and his wife, Ann Bogan Cooke, landed at Point Conception on the western coast of Mexico and explored what would become modern-day Encinitas County. They named their new settlement after a small mountain peak in nearby San Diego County – Encinitas Peak – because they thought it would be difficult for Indians to find and attack them if they were located near such an imposing location. The first post office was established in Encinitas on October 1, 1857. The population of Encinitas grew rapidly from its original seven residents to around 100 by 1860 due to the arrival of several hundred more miners and settlers following the discovery of gold in Northern Mexico during that year’s Gold Rush era. By 1870,Encinitas had reached a population size of over 500 people! In 1916 Mayor Franklin Crippen proposed annexing neighboring La Jolla Village to form a municipally run commonwealth within City Limits but this proposal was not accepted until 1935 when City Manager Harry Fenton recommended annexation because he felt that La Jolla Village could not handle its own affairs without government assistance which would have included services like streetlights and water systems! In 1936 City Manager Harry Fenton recommended annexing nearby Imperial Beach because he felt that Imperial Beach could not handle its own affairs without government assistance which would have included services like streetlights and water systems! This recommendation was accepted by CITY Councilmember Edward Hickey who led efforts to create Encinitas Municipal Corporation effective January 1st 1937! After much debate between Councilmember Hickey’s administration and then Mayor Frank Hague’s administration over how best to proceed with municipal incorporation/annexation proposals during World War II (1942-1945), ordinances were passed establishing City Hall at 555 S Main Street as well as creating Police Department Headquarters at 345 N Main Street; these buildings now house both the Sheriff’s Department & Fire Department!. Encinitas was founded in 1876 by John H. Encina and his father, José H. Encina. The first post office was established at Encinitas in 1882. In 1909, the town was renamed for General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who had fought for Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The population of Encinitas grew rapidly from its original population of only 100 in 1880 to 1,500 by 1920. In 1916, the United States military built a fortification called Fort Myer on land that now encompasses much of Encinitas Cove. The first oil well was drilled at Encinitas in 1951 and production began in 1957. The U.S.-Mexico Pipeline Company constructed a pipeline from Corpus Christi, Texas to Encinitas and began shipping oil there in 1961; this helped contribute toencouraging development along the Cove’s recreational waterfront area beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s
