Encinitas is a small town in San Diego County, California. In 1824, Juan Crespítner sold his interest in Rancho Santa Fe to Nicholas de Ovando. By 1827, all but one family had left for what is now Orange County because of gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill near Sacramento. A few people remained until 1838 when they were replaced by an Englishman named John Fenton who named it after himself - encinita meaning "clear sky." In 1849, George Hearst built a mill on Pinnacle Hill which became one of Southern California's largest employers; other early mills included those built by Hennepin & Co., gristmills operated by Elisha Gray and James Waddell (both destroyed), and mines owned by Don Enrique Castro (destroyed). By 1860, there were over 150 businesses in Encinitas with a payroll of $1 million annually. Fenton's mill continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to fire caused by sparks from machinery being used in nearby quarries for stonecutting purposes; this event is also generally cited as the beginning of Encinitas' decline as an agricultural center during the late 19th century.
