The growth of Encinitas can be traced back to its incorporation into the United States as a municipality on November 3, 1896. Today, Encinitas has a population over nineteen hundred residents and is one of Southern California’s most vibrant communities. The history of Encinitas cannot be fully understood without understanding its relationship to other nearby cities such as San Diego and San Francisco. At first, local citizens relied heavily on agricultural production for their sustenance; however, this changed after railroad access arrived inencinately throughout the early 1800s. In 1853, the Alameda Foothills were purchased by George Hearst and named after his father-in-law, Don Carlos Ferrer. The wildflower meadow was part of the original Rancho San Pedro land grant given toFerrer in 1820. In 1876, when the California Gold Rush started and many people came to find their fortune in the area, many wells were drilled there for water and gold. By 1907, Encinitas had 5 blocks of business downtown with a population of over 100. The first post office opened in 1912. In 1916, encinitas became incorporated as a town with a population of around 350 residents. The first businesses in Encinitas were general stores that sold goods such as flour, bacon, eggs and butter; however these years are long gone but their memories remainenterprise legacy such as “The Best Place for Pancakes” which still stands today on Main Street corner intersection with Rincon Avenue (now University Way). From 1916 until 1947 there was only one bank in town: The First National Bank.
