Encinitas is a city in San Diego County, California,United States. The population was 20,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Encinitas comes from the Spanish word encina, meaning "mountain" or "hill." It was incorporated as a town on July 15, 1911. Encinitas has been inhabited by Date palms since pre-historic times. There are evidence that people lived here for up to 10,000 years ago. traders and travelers passed through Encinitas during the 17th century and early 18th century. The first European settlers arrived in 1821 when Manuel Nieto composed an adobe mission near present-day Encinitas and named it Rancho San Miguel de la Laguna for José Gomez de la Cruz who had founded La Jolla about two miles away on December 14 of that year. Nicolas Perez happened to be trailside when Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López Bonilla discovered Nieto's adobe and burned it down; he was arrested and transported back to Mexico City along with other Californios who were tried before Governor Pardo y Ruiz in 1824 because they had not registered as citizens of Tijuana yet. After his release he resumed ranching near what is now downtown Encinitas with his brother Vicente Vázquez and in 1830 erected the first adobe walls around present-day town perimeter (later known as Town Walls). In 1851 Francisco Ortiz built a small chapel at today's corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Midway Road which became one of the earliest churches inencinita (now called Mission Santa Barbara). In 1886 private entrepreneur John Sutter established Campo del Norte near present-day Midway Road/Route 66 where he started raising horses for carriage transportation overland from Stockton Bayou northward to eastern Los Angeles County: Sutter also ran a small grocery store there until his death in 1896 . In 1907 local landowner Harry Harvey donated 640 acres (250 hectares) east of Midway Road between Ford Boulevard/PCH junction south of Interstate 5widening US 101 south to meet Aliso Creek - all within today’s city limits - plus improvements thereto including access roads, swimming beach etc., making Encinitas Jurisdiction No . 1 under state statute following passage by state Legislature thereof (itself taking effect upon donation) . On October 13 1912 local voters adopted an ordinance providing for incorporation by vote only “of all white male inhabitants over 21 years old residing within this city limits” after examining certain boundaries proposed therein; formal Incorporation took place November 2nd same year pursuant thereto by Honorable Mayor Emilio Aguirre with signature of Secretary Of State Clara Barton – thus becoming one village within our own backyard! In 1916, a local oil well led to the development of Encinitas as an oil-producing town. In 1961,Encinitas voters passed a referendum calling for approval of aMeasure M which authorized annexation by Torrance County. The measure failed to receive enough support and was repealed two years later.
