In 1849 John Cranch sold his interest in the mine to American David Hogg who named it after himself – Hoggs Mine. From 1850 until 1861 there was some prospecting but no production because of low grades of gold. In 1863 A J Howe sent a party of men overland from San Diego under contract with George Hearn to explore an old Spanish Trail connection between Baja California and Monterey Bay that led thence to Gold Country. On July 21 they reached Punta Cana Creek where they stopped for water; night fell and they continued next day when they discovered a very large body of water on shore which lay behind some mountains about two miles away They called this place “Hagar” (place). This creek formed part of what are now known as Lower Punta Gorda Rd., US-110 W., Carlsbad Dr., CR-2 N., Encinas Ave., 2nd St./Pico Blvd., US-101 E (now US-110 S.), resp.) It is the second-smallest city in San Diego County and the smallest municipality by area within San Diego County.
