Encinitas, California is a small city located in Southern California. The population was 23,695 at the 2010 census. It is known for its wine industry and as the home of NASA's Encinitas Mirroring Station. The area that makes up Encinitas now consisted of vast chaparral forests and desert plains that were used for agriculture by Native Americans until the early 1800s when Spanish settlers arrived. The first Europeans to explore this part of California were the Cabrillo Expedition in 1542, which found no success in finding a route to Asia through what is now Baja California. In 1821 Juan Crespí explored San Diego Bay and discovered an alkaline bay with spawner lagoons named "Los Algodones" or "Algo Grande". This led him to name the bay After him (Algoyon). In 1846, Mission San José de la Union was founded on Rancho Santa Margarita about mile south of present-day Encinitas. However, because it was illegal for white men to live on Mexican land east of the Tehachapi Mountains, only 7 priests from Mission Santa Barbara lived there during its establishment including Father José Saravia and Father Francisco Gutierrez y Valdivia who served as chaplains to both missions; they did not build any churches or other structures on their rancho until after Mexican independence had been granted in 1848. In 1865 Antonio Vallejo became governor of Mexico City and ordered all Spanish-owned property be seized including Mission San José de la Union since it still belonged to Spain under international law despite Mexico gaining independence from Spain. A group of Californios led by John Sutter took action against Governor Vallejo's order and began building a town called Prospect Heights within current day Encinitas just south of Interstate 5 near where Sutter's Fort Bidwell now stands. At first prospects for goldmining were very poor but over time some settlements began popping up around prospectors' camps due to easy access to water and good soil conditions combined with cheap labor from nearby towns like Durango which had started growing rapidly due to railroad construction workers coming through those parts during that time period The firstEncinitastransportation service started operating between Durango via Wells Fargo wagon trains using Stagecoach drivers in late 1860s whenriverboats could not carry passengers over swollen river beds caused by recent rainsstorms.......................................................................................migration increased throughout late 19th century especially as cotton plantations grew along southern coast......................................................................................the largest influx occurred following American Civil War when millions relocate seeking jobs.................................................................................the communities formed around railroads connecting them.................................................................encinitAS container port opened in 1969..................................................................................
