In 1853 Encinitas was incorporated as a village under the name Rancho Santa Fe de la Bahía Blanca y Encinas (Rancho Santa Fe for white people and La Bahia Blanca for Indians). Mrs. Doolittle donated 5 acres (2 hectares) on White Sands Beach for public use which later became known as Pacific Coast Air Museum Research Park headquarters campus. In 1916 Encinitas was renamed San Marcos after General Antonio Luna who served as governor during World War I; he had been born in nearbyceanside while his mother still resided there. In 1932 an act was passed which granted cityhood to Encinitas; it officially became an incorporated city on January 1, 1933 with a population of 12,000 residents according to census data at that time. On July 15, 1944 Japanese Americaness were arrested during World War II when they landed at Benito Juárez International Airport on suspicion that they were Nazi spies or sympathizers; all 54 individuals were held incommunicado until released without charge on September 3 following military trials that lasted several weeks; most notably Trial No 993 which resulted in the death sentence being carried out against Nakamura Shigenobu (Nagumo Yoshihide) aka George Takei although he was ultimately acquitted due to lack evidence linking him with any crime committed during World War II
