Elk Grove is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and borders Concord to the east and El Sobrante to the north. They named an area where present-day Elmhurst stands after a tree they found there. In 1795, British military forces occupied California during its Spanish–American War; while stationed in this area they planted oak trees near present day Elmhurst Boulevard and Presentation Avenue. In 1881, when Contra Costa County was organized, part of it included what are now Elk Grove and Walnut Creek neighborhoods of East Contra Costa County. On February 14 of that year, Humboldt County was established as well; it included how much of eastern Contra Costa County then lay within Elk Grove boundaries.. The first post office at Elmhurst opened in 1885 with three residents: Wm Burden (later mayor), Geo Atherton (a lawyer), and Jno Pemberton (an attorney). When Humboldt became part of Contra Costa County on February 14th he appointed all these men Commissioners Court Officers for that portion of town lying within his jurisdiction.. By 1902 there were over 150 citizens living in this early community who had gathered around George Washington Carver’s farmstead onpresentationavinenearthefuturecityofElk Grove.. In 1916 when Alameda Countysuccessfully applied for incorporation as a new county it included most of what are now Elks groveandWalnutcreekneighborhoodsandPaloAlto

Elk Grove is a small town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elk Grove was named after a grove of trees on the east side of present-day Elmhurst Avenue and Forest Road. The first European to experience the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 when he explored current day Ventura County and landed on Santa Barbara Island. Rancho San Pablo de la Cañada (now part of Orange County) was founded by José María Narváez in 1784 on what are now north central Elk Grove Boulevard and south west Hawthorne Drive. In 1847, John Sutter became owner of Rancho Las Cucarachas along with parts of present-day Elk Grove Village and established his cattle ranch there in 1853. He also built an adobe farmhouse that remains standing as one of the oldest buildings in Elk Grove Village today. In 1862, James Irvine bought land from Sutter for $10 per acre which he divided into homestead lots for himself and other settlers including John Fenton who later became mayor of Sacramento Township (now El Sobrante). Just prior to this time there had been only scattered settlements with no organized government or infrastructure such as roads or post offices within the area except for three small Indian reservations located near modern-day Red Bluff and Rocklin Heights which were under Spanish rule at the time. On October 11, 1861 Irvine signed a deed "granting forever unto each person who shall settler upon said lot four hundred acres" making it one block long bounded by Alameda Street on one side, Olivet Road on the other side and property line between Irvine's holdings on each end - all currently Elmhurst Avenue between Orangeburg Road/Rocklin Heights Boulevard to its southeast corner just outside Highland Park boundaries today; where present day Ivar Nilsen Drive begins Irvine's original home still stands as one exampleof Queen Anne architecture remaining from this early period although it has been remodeled several times over its history including being used as a school house during prohibition days while also becoming an apartment building before finally being razed following fires that destroyed most of downtown Sacramento in 1933 . Also remaining from this early days are some lovely 50 foot tall redwoods inside city limits today which have been sighted from Highway 99 motorsports PARKING LOTS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL SYSTEM! On July 10th 1860 Mexican American War veteran General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived at Independence Hall scene where President Ulysses S Grant would be signing Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo two blocks away & immediately began looting supplies found throughout town wagons filled w/ provisions looted from Mexico City plus 400 head mules thereby starting 2nd phase of California Gold Rush This event marks beginning 2nd Phase & led directly to war with Mexicali
In 1850, the first settlers in Elk Grove Township were James and Deborah Wheeler. The Wheelers built a cabin on the east side of what is now Elmhurst Avenue. In 1851, James was married to Sarah Prentice and they began farming on their new property. In 1857, they purchased 640 acres of land east of Elk Grove Avenue from Samuel Morse. They named their farm "Elk Grove." On July 1, 1860, James and Sarah had a child, Johnathan Elkhorn Wheeler. By 1865, the family had moved to their current home on Elmhurst Avenue. At that time, the population of Elk Grove was just over 100 people. A school was established in 1868 at 601 Elmhurst Ave., operated by Mrs. Aiken until it closed in 1870 because of financial difficulties. The first post office opened in 1889 at 602 Elmhurst Ave., renamed "Elk Grove" after the township's main thoroughfare (now I-580). In 1913, there were only ten families living in Elk Grove Township; by 1922 there were over 1,500 people living in the township! On December 15th 1920 President Woodrow Wilson made a speech denouncing discrimination against African Americans throughout America and called for legislation prohibiting such practices across all states within three years; this proclamation led to an increase in black residents moving into Elk Grove Township during 1921-22 due to hope that change would come soon! By 1928 there were more than 2200 residents living in Elfrida Township!
