Elk Grove is a small city located in the Sacramento Valley, about 25 miles southeast of Sacramento. The population was 7,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade Metropolitan Statistical Area and is home to several universities and businesses including California State University, East Bay (CSUEB), Sutter HealthCare System, and American Red Cross. Elk Grove's history goes back to 1847 when Ponderosa Ranch was established on land now known as Elmwood Avenue. Over time, other ranchers joined Ponderosa until it became an extensive homesteading operation with over 120 families. The community's name comes from a grove of elks that were once common in this area. In 1886, J.C. Hagin organized a citizens' committee to improve public transportation in the area and recommended creating a town center around the old railroad depot which would house stores, hotels, and a library. On December 5th 1889, Elk Grove was officially incorporated as a town by then Mayor John Waddell with $1 cash and four shotguns given to him by Henry Cisneros - one for each inhabitant of the new town! In 1905, Elk Grove hired its first full-time Municipal Clerk - Mrs Alma French - who served until her death in 1959! That same year saw the erection of City Hall which still stands today – one of only two buildings in town still standing from original incorporation! During World War II various industries situated within or near Elk Grove produced war materials such as tires for military vehicles and munitions; pulp paper for airplanes; aluminum cans for tanks; rubber products; processing oilseed crops like sesame seed and cottonseed; chemical plants manufacturing gasoline etc.; clothing manufacturers like Girdler’s Clothing Corporation (later Sears) made their model homes hereabouts before moving out during postwar years while local residents built new homes on acres annexed by the city during that time . . . although some industry did continue after incorporation such as printing presses making T-shirts for Dell computer dealerships some have long since gone away including Bendix Corporation’s Elks Park Paper Plant which manufactured corduroys/waist pants therefrom into the late 1970s leading to allegations that government officials were secretly laundering money through these companies

Elk Grove, California is a census-designated place located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 22,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The town was founded in 1877 by John Sutter and others as a citrus orchards and vineyard community on the southern edge of present-day Elk Grove Village. The name "Elk Grove" came from nearby hills that were used for grazing elks and other livestock. In 1915, when the King family purchased an area near what is now downtown Elk Grove Village and began to develop it as a community of their own, they decided to change the name to "Elk Grove". In 1968, citizens of Elk Grove successfully petitioned for city status; this made them members of the City of San Francisco instead of Contra Costa County residents. As a result, much Elkhorn Valley history may not be included in local histories because it does not pertain directly to their municipality. A number of factors have contributed to this relatively recent lack of overlap between city and rural residents: first, most people living within city boundaries work outside the limits; second, many residents are commuters who ride public transportation into San Francisco or office buildings within walking distance; third, few people live in unincorporated areas surroundingSan Francisco proper; fourth (and finally), there are no streets named after individuals or organizations associated with either city Limits
Elk Grove is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is bordered by Citrus Heights to the west, Carlsbad to the north, Placer County to the east and south, and Yuba City to the southeast. It occupies most of eastern Sacramento County. The first Europeans known for living in what is now Elk Grove were Missionaries Franciscan friars who settled there in 1824. They named it San Francisco de las Animas after their patron saint: San Francisco of Assisi. The mission's close proximity to Mexican territory during the 19th century led some people on both sides of the border to falsely believe that San Francisco had been founded by Friars as part of a larger plan called "The Alta California Missions". At one point between 1848 and 1851 there were over 20 missions in this area controlled by various religious orders with Elmira being especially numerous with over 100 residents according to one source In 1855 when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Northern California an influx of settlers followed including many Californio Mexicans who were seeking wealth beyond their traditional fields such as mining or agriculture. Many ranchers also migrated into central and southern Sacramento Counties during this time including John Sutter who founded Sutter's Mill just north of where Elk Grove now stands
