Elk Grove, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 58,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city within the San Francisco Peninsula and Bay Area. Elk Grove grew up around two small towns: Elk Grove Village and Atherton. The first settlers to the area were Missionaries from Mexico who arrived in 1776. They named the area "Atherton" after their farmstead in England. Atherton was founded by Father José de Jesús Obregon y Uribe on a piece of land that now includes parts of Elmhurst and La Honda Streets. The mission was abandoned by 1823 because of persecution from the Mexican government. In 1844, gold was discovered at Siskiyou Hill on Telegraph Road near where current-day Elmhurst stands - this led to massive growth for both Elk Grove Village and Atherton due to new found wealth and an influx of people looking for a better life in an undeveloped area outside of San Francisco proper. In 1848, when California became a state, most residents moved out west into what is now Sacramento because they thought it would be easier to get ahead financially if they lived closer to Sacramento than San Francisco proper (At this time there were no suburbs). However, many chose to stay put because they believed that Elks Grove would not prosper without its namesake village nearby – which it did eventually become known for being one of Northern California’s most beautiful small towns with rolling hillsides bordered by vineyards and orchards dating back hundreds of years Atherton saw another boom during World War II as many workers came through town looking for work in various munitions plants throughout NorthernCalifornia In 1945, when hostilities ended, most natives returned home but some continue living there until today .
