Elk Grove is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 56,819 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population and second-largest city in the Bay Area after San Francisco. The city is named for a grove of trees situated near where it was founded in 1887. Elk Grove's rich history dates back to its founding when ranchers set up camp on the then undeveloped land between El Sobrante Boulevard and Woodruff Avenue. In 1887, George Washington Carver donated land to the town for schools, churches, water supplies and other purposes. The first public school opened in 1889 and was known as Elmwood School until 1907 when it became Elk Grove High School. The City of Elk Grove took over responsibility for education within its boundaries in 1916. At that time there were only 4 elementary schools (2 middle schools and 2 high schools) with an enrollment of just under 6,000 students; however, due to growth within Contra Costa County at that time, the number of elementarySchools increased rapidly to 27 by 1942 with an enrollment exceeding 24,,000 students! By 1978 there were 26 elementary Schools (10 middle Schools and 14 high Schools) while only 5 existed serving less than 8700 students; Today there are 16 Elementary Schools (9 middle Schools and 13 high Schools), 3 Specialty High Schools (Pre-K through 12th grade), 3 Adult Learning Centers (Adult Education Courses from Pre-K through 12th grade), 7 Career Centers (with more opening every day!), 11 Parks & Recreation Department facilities including one open space dedicated exclusively to youth hockey programs - making Elk Grove one of Northern California’s most dynamic cities for family fun!

Elk Grove is a city in the northern California county of Sacramento. It is located in the eastern end of the Central Valley, on the east bank of the Sacramento River. As of the 2010 census, Elk Grove had a population of 98,521 people. The city was founded by Mormons in 1847 as Cedar City and named for an oak tree that grew near their farmstead. In 1855, when John Sutter discovered gold in nearby Oroville County, he moved his ranch to what is now Elk Grove and named it for his discovery. The first white settlers arrived in Elk Grove about 1848; they were Swiss immigrants who came overland from Switzerland via Oregon Territory. The first post office opened in 1850, and for many years it was known as Cedar City. The name change was due to objections from some residents who felt that it sounded like an Indian word (elk) carrying negative connotations. Eventually, all but one settler left Cedar City because they found no gold or other valuable minerals there and continued to reside at their original farmstead until around 1880 when most relocated again to towns closer to civilization because farming had become more difficult due to large swaths of virgin forest that still remained unbroken throughout much of central California during those years. In 1855, when John Sutter discovered gold in nearby Oroville County, he moved his ranch to what is now Elk Grove and named it after his discovery. By 1890 most farmers living within 500 feet (150 m) of where he lived had followed suit; this led to its nickname "The Gold Rush Capital." Goldmining operations began here soon after Sutter's discovery but production ceased by 1893 because increasing competition from other mines made mining too expensive and difficult without new technology developments such as open-pit mining methods which then became available elsewhere). This also coincided with rapid population growth making Elks Grove arguably one of Northern California's fastest growing communities ever during that time period especially given its relatively small size compared even today’s largest cities like Berkeley or Los Angeles*.
