Elk Grove is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Elk Grove is located adjacent to Walnut Creek and its feeder streams are the Santa Clara River and the Cobble Creek Valley Stream. The history of Elk Grove dates back to 1847 when four Mormon missionaries arrived in what is now Contra Costa County and founded the towns of Concord, Pleasanton, Livermore and Orinda on Elks Grove Ridge just south of Walnut Creek. In 1851, John Sutter opened up land north of Walnut Creek for settlement by Americans who would become known as Missionaries of Christ (Mormons). The first post office in Elk Grove was established in 1852. In 1870, Joseph Copley platted one block of land off Elm Street between High Street and Royal Avenue for a Methodist church which became known as First Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church). A second Methodist church was built at Sixth and I Streets in 1904-1905; it burned down some time after being built but was later rebuilt on this site. In 1909-1910 two villages were organized within present day Elk Grove: Apple Valley on Menlo Park Boulevard east of Interstate 80 near El Sobrante Road, then annexed by Elmhurst; and Willow Glen to the south on Menlo Park Boulevard east of Interstate 280 near Uniondale Road. In 1911 Willow Glen incorporated as a city with a population estimated at 100 people; it merged with Elmhurst in 1978. A school district was formed from parts of five earlier school districts: City View School District #2 (Alameda), Brentwood Elementary School District #1 ( Contra Costa), Dublintown Elementary School District #3 (Fremont), Nutley Middle School District #4 (Orinda) & Redding High School District #5 (Saratoga Springs). The new school district had three schools - Clinton Junior Senior High School (opened 1927), Fruitvale Intermediate Middle School(opened 1958),[and] Montclair Jr./Sr.,HighSchool(opened 1962)]. Fruitvale closed in 2006 due to lack of student enrollment after more than 30 years operation while Montclair continued operations until 2016 under lease from ValenciaUSD charter school operators

Elk Grove is a small, rural town in Northern California. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is located in Contra Costa County and adjacent to the cities of Berkeley and Hayward. The first European to visit Elk Grove was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on his way from Mexico City to San Francisco on November 17, 1542. He named it after the elks he saw grazing on the Rancho Cachuma near modern-day Elkhorn Valley. The first residents were ranch hands who worked the land that now includes Elk Grove. The town began as a small agricultural community with just a few homes and a store in 1881. By 1909, there were over 100 people living in Elk Grove. In 1923, Senator James Melson of Sacramento proposed that Elk Grove become an incorporated village because of its importance within Contra Costa County’s government structure and economy. In 1925, voters approved incorporation by referendum with a majority vote of 71%. In 1928, construction began on what would become Elmhurst High School; it opened in 1929. In 1954, due to drought conditions across much of Northern California, the US Forest Service set up an experimental deer management program known as “Deer Operation No 1” in central California; this led to increased deer populations in many parts of the state including Elk Grove which benefited from hunting opportunities for years afterwards. A primary reason for growth during this time was also development around Elmhurst High School – students from nearby villages such as Hercules and Orinda started coming to school early each morning so they could catch buses into downtown Berkeley before classes started at 9:00am (this practice continued until 1955). This added more than 1800 square feet (150 m2) onto Elmhurst Avenue between Eighth Street and Ninth Street which significantly increased access to education for locals and newcomers alike.– From 1950-2002:Reflecting History
