Elk Grove is a small town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern corner of Sacramento County and is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elk Grove was incorporated on December 12, 1887. The village of Elk Grove was platted in 1864 by George Washington Carver and others as a rural community near present-day Elmira Heights. A post office called Elks Grove was established in 1865, and remained in operation until 1906. The name may be derived from an orchard near present-day Elmira Heights that used to supply apples from nearby forests. In 1892, two brothers founded the City Brewery which became one of the largest brewing companies in California; it still operates today as a brewery with over 100 employees. In 1902, Elk Grove voters approved annexation by the city of Sacramento; this led to rapid growth for both villages due to natural resources such as watermelons and oranges being available for sale within minutes of each other. During World War II, many people working for Boeing built their homes in what is now downtown Elk Grove; these homes remain standing today as part of Historic District #2 (Old Southtown). After years of development limbo – culminating with a failed effort to get Measure J passed by voters – local leaders rallied around Mayor Jack Jones’ plan to redevelop downtown into an arts and culture district centered around Regency Ballroom Theatre & Museum (RBTM), Lion’s Gate Park Zoo & Botanical Garden (LGP), Credit Union Row Studios & Live Music Hall (CUVH), and new housing developments focused on cottage living style known as "The Village". These projects were successful enough that Jones then took them to state legislators who successfully enacted Measure K creating Downtown Fresno's first "Neighborhood watch" program which helped keep developers away from/_near_the old city center while also providing tax breaks for businesses inside the current city limits

In 1849, the city of Elk Grove was founded by John S. Dutton and his brother-in-law, George W. Ladd. The first post office in the city was established in 1850. In 1853, the city became a part of Sacramento County. In 1858, the City Council enacted an ordinance to name the street after General Ulysses S. Grant because he had been a main backer of their incorporation as a city. The first mayor of Elk Grove was James Grafton McConnell who served from 1860 to 1862 and again from 1870 to 1872; he is also known for being one of the earliest mayors in Sacramento County when it formed on January 1, 1850 Elk Grove experienced rapid growth during its early years and by 1888 had reached a population of over 100 residents. However, during its peak period many businesses were closed due to prohibition laws which were starting to be repealed throughout California at this time The late 1800s saw some significant changes take place within Elk Grove as well with advances in transportation like automobiles and motorcycles making it easier for people to get around town In 1924, Elmira Street was dedicated as an official street in honor of Mayor George Hargrave who had championed development along that corridor In 1974, downtown Elkhorn Avenue intersected I-580 just south of City Hall which made it possible for motorists heading eastbound on Elmira Street into downtown Sacramento to exit onto I-580 northbound without having to go through downtown Elk Grove
