Knife historian and author Donny Weigel has written about knife history in Elk Grove for several years now and he has amassed a wealth of information on these companies and their products. The earliest references to knives in Elk Grove can be found from 1881 when two men named Eberhardt and Gosnell set up a small shop selling tools near the current site of The Slicing Company. This business was probably started by Eberhardt's brother-in-law, George Hutton, who had worked as an apprentice with his father-in-law at a sawmill in nearby Sacramento. In 1882, Hutton opened a grocery store on Third Street near present day Elmira Road which served as the first commercial market for handcrafted knives in Elk Grove. Sales at this early store were probably insignificant but it was during this time that Hutton met William Steuben who became his partner in the business. Eventually, both men decided to open their own shop and within a few years they had become one of the leading knife manufacturers in town. By 1893 they were manufacturing complete sets of kitchen knives including straight edge blades (the precursor to today's chef's Knife) as well as folders (later renamed steak knives). They also produced some unusual items such as folding fans (known today only from photographs). In 1898 they moved their manufacturing operations to what is now known as the Steuben Building on Fourth Street south of Broadway where they continued to produce high quality Damascus steel swords until 1951 when production shifted back to their original location. In addition to producing high quality knives, The Slicing Company also sold knifes made from various materials including bone, horn or ivory handles trimmed with hide or leather along with imitation stag or buffalo horns for use as headwear. Many people believe that this company played an important role in helpingto popularize edged Weapons within American society during its early days. Elk Grove is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. Elk Grove was founded in 1887 by George and Anna Bethel. The Bethel family was the first white settlers to reside in what is now Elk Grove Village. George Bethel operated a shop at the corner of Highway 99 and Elm Street until his death in 1903. He bequeathed his store and land to his wife, Anna, who built a home on their lot. In 1922, AnnaBethel gifted her home to the government of California for use as an educational institution. The Bethels continued to live on their property until they died in 1961. The original school building still stands today and is used as a community center.
The Elk Grove area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the early 1800s. The first permanent European settlers were French fur traders who came to California in 1836. By 1840, the area had become part of Mexico and was under American control. A group of Americans led by John Sutter discovered gold at nearby Sutter's Fort in 1849, and the town of Elk Grove began to grow up around it. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 998 which granted Voting Rights to all persons within five hundred miles of Washington D.C., including the Elk Grove area. This allowed African Americans to vote for the first time in United States history. The town rapidly grew into a small city with a population of over 100,000 people by 1870. The Civil War ended with General Grant's victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. However, Reconstruction continued until 1877 when it was repealed by Congress because of riots that had broken out throughout the South following Union victories. In 1850, there were only 2 black men registered in Elk Grove; however, this number increased to 20 by 1870 due to improved railroad transportation and better economic opportunities for African Americans across America. Elk Grove became an independent city on November 3, 1893 when it merged with two other smaller cities – Crystal City and Sycamore – making up what is now calledthe Central Valley Cities Association (CVCA). CVCA is a regional collaborative organization that promotes economic development throughout Northern California’s Central Valley region from Sacramento through El Sobrante and Redding through Placer County
