Elk Grove is a city in Northern California, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is located in Contra Costa County and covers an area of 362 square miles (818 km²). The first Europeans to visit Elk Grove were the Spanish explorers who named it Rancho San Francisco after their captain, Francisco de Salinas. The original electric streetcars running through town only served downtown streets and did not go beyond that point until 1912 when electrification extended all along Main Street east to Uptown. When incorporation as a city occurred on January 15, 1907 following approval by voters, electricity became a major factor in growth and development within the city limits. Some aspects of early city government such as Elections Commission meetings were held over telephone lines from City Hall while other activities like fire department operations took place out-of-town at what is now known as Fire Station No 2 on University Boulevard just east of downtown. In 1961, Elk Grove's incorporation as a city made it one of only two cities in California (along with Santa Clara) to have both an incorporated and unincorporated portion of their territory combined into one municipality
