In 1984, the city annexed portions of Diamond Heights and El Sobrante to form their own City of Elk Grove annexation. In 2003, City Council approved annexation of unincorporated areas including parts of Diamond Heights and El Sobrante. Elk Grove is a largely residential area with few businesses or services outside its downtown core. Agriculture remains an important part of the community's economy with some 7 farms comprising over 50% of all production statewide for corn, hay, straw pellets, cigarettes and other products exported from Elk Grove-Redwood National Park

The name "Elk Grove" comes from the oak trees that dot the city's landscape. Elk Grove is located adjacent to Sacramento and Modesto Counties. The City of Elk Grove was founded by ranchers as a way to provide shade for their cattle while they grazed in what is now Sacramento County. The first post office at Elk Grove opened in 1887. In 1916, the city began annexing parts of neighboring towns including Arden and La Purisima Hills. In 1919, when it became clear that land west of I-680 would need to be developed for housing because of growth in Sacramento County, the City Council voted to become an independent municipality with its own government andPolice department. On November 2nd, 1969, after years of planning and celebration by Mayor John Ahern spearheaded by then City Clerk Ray Krueger (now City Attorney), Elk Grove officially became one big happy family when voters approved Measure E (the "Cityhood Amendment") which granted self-government status to the community within two years - making it one of only three cities in California to achieve this milestone! The Annexation process continued with purchases from other nearby municipalities over ensuing years as needed until all unincorporated areas were annexed into town limits on January 1st 1984 – making Elk Grove one million strong! Today’s Elkhorn Avenue runs through downtown streets which are home to more than 150 businesses employing over 350 workers who generate $75 million annually taxable income!
Elk Grove, California was founded in 1871 by John C. Fremont and it is located in the Riverside County region of California. The city is named after a grove of trees that were once common in the area. The first post office was established in Elk Grove on April 1, 1872. In 1886, the city became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 30 people.
