Today, Elk Grove is home to a diverse population that includes many families who commute into Los Angeles for work or education; young professionals who live downtown; retirees coming for short visits during their summertime homes elsewhere in Southern California; people from all walks of life whose children attend local public schools until they reach college age; Seventh Day Adventists own several churches in town; and many other organizations/groups engaged in various aspects of social welfare or economic development. It is approximately 20 miles northwest of downtownSacramento. The first known inhabitants of what is now Elk Grove were Native Americans who may have been ancestors of modern-day Pomo Indians. The town was founded in 1865 by various groups of European immigrants as a logging community on land that had formerly been part of BishopGateley Ranch. At its peak during World War II, it had a population of 5,000 people. In recent years, much development has taken place in the town which has led to an increase in population and property values. Today, Elk Grove is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions including two professional symphony orchestras and several museums including the locally based American Indian Museum and Park. The economy remains largely agricultural with crops such as fruits and vegetables grown along with livestock such as hay/cattle/livestock careens or elk hunts; there are also some manufacturing operations carried out within the town limits such as produced items for local retailers or exported products from Asia
Elk Grove was founded in 1872 by Captain Edward D. Elk and his wife, Mrs. Anna B. Elk. The original house on the lot where the city of Elk Grove now stands was built in 1876. In 1912, the City of Elk Grove incorporation was granted and a new city hall, fire station, and police department were built on what is now Elm Street between Wabash Avenue and Mayfair Boulevard. In 1916, an addition to the city hall complex was dedicated to Dr. John Cushing who had been a leading figure in developing modern medical practices in Northern California. The buildings that stand today on Elm Street between Wabash Avenue and Mayfair Boulevard were constructed as part of this project; they include a library, hospital, post office, and clinic. The City of Elk Grove absorbed portions of nearby Park Meadows in 1984-85 when those towns merged into thecity. In 1990-1991 construction began on a new $30 million arena for the Republican National Committee which would become known as Trump Plaza; it opened in 1992 and has since been used mostly for concerts rather than sports events. Due to its location within walking distance of many major amenities (including three schools), Elkhorn Heights became home to numerous high-end shopping centers over the years including Saks Fifth Avenue/Neiman Marcus locations inside Trump Plaza as well as Macy's Department Store across from Interstate 5 at 95th Street South near Lake Michigan Shorelines Drive/Lake Michigan Piers Drive/Elkhorn Lakes Drive/Lake Michigan Shorelines Drive (now Donald Eager Way).
