Elk Grove is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 76,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and surrounds downtown Oakland. The first people to live in what is now Elk Grove were the Ohlone people who lived there for fishing and hunting grounds. They left about 12,000 years ago when the coast moved inland. In 1825, Rancho Cerro Gordo was granted to José Maria Cuellar by Governor Manuel Michelini. The grant included land east of Alameda Street and north of Sacramento Street which later became Elk Grove Village. In 1868, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on the site that would become Elks Grove Village; this mill was destroyed by fire in 1872 but rebuilt and continued operations until 1907). A year later (1869), another mill called North Star began operation on Mission Creek near present-day MacArthur Boulevard and Elmira Road; this mill also failed but was replaced by a new one in 1875 which continued operating until 1906. In 1876, two brothers named George Washington Kelley created a small farm outside of town (now known as Kelley’s Valley) with some cows and other animals on 6 acres (2 ha). This farm became an important stop for travelers going through Contra Costa County because it offered milk from its cow pastures as well as eggs from its hatching chickens. The Kelley brothers are credited with developing what is now known as Elmira Avenue in what is now Elk Grove Village; their ranch house still stands today! A few years later (1877), John Coyle started lottering around here using his initials JC for "John Chenault." By 1880, lots had been sold for $2 per acre ($40 per square mile). In 1888–89, Jellico opened up shop at 342 Townsend Ave.,later renamed Jellico's Food Store & Cafeteria before moving to 701 Townsend Ave.,Elk Grove village after opening day. Jellico's store was one of many businesses built during a time when Streetsboro Blvd.-Elk Grove Rd.-(present-day) Belmont Ave.-Evelyn Rd.-(now Albany St.) were all major thoroughfares within walking distance of each other! With no railroads running through Contra Costa County at that time (!), goods shipped westward needed only be transported by boat or wagon so commercial activity within town center was limited; however, considerable progress had been made in development of Elmira Ave., including construction of two schools: One public school building erected between 1890-92 & 1902-03 & one private school building erected between 1903-04 & 1905-06. When World War I started (1914), eastern Contra Costa county residents chose not to participate due to military service obligations while westerners did so; however, most villagers remained supportive once hostilities ended Elk Grove entered into default on its mortgage late in 1915 which caused economic hardship for many citizens throughout 1916-17; however it soon got straightened out thanks to earnest offers from various business/financial partners including Mr.. Wohlgemuth who agreed to finance the city's long term debt The city seal reflects stories about early settlers - one story says "Here men went off with their herds into the great open country beyond" while another tells about how pioneers "...worked their way gradually towards what they considered an ideal spot...This creek formed their starting point for pioneering...They filled up every inch of available space until at last they reached that headlands overlooking Lake Merritt." As early as 1886 local residents had organized themselves into Township 8th Californian militia unit under Captains Potter Stewart and Hildebrandt Smith Jr.; township membership expanded rapidly during these years leading ultimately to incorporation as a City on November 15th 1898 . From 1889-'98 City Limits were set forth by ordinance establishing park boundaries surrounding current civic center area - Presidio Heights Cemetery being added circa 1900 following interment there since 1861). Elk Grove is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 34,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is situated on the north bank of the Sacramento River. The first Europeans to visit Elk Grove were Spanish traders in 1769. The mission here was founded by Franciscan missionaries on land that once belonged to Rancho Elkhorn Mexican Land grant. The rancho was granted by Governor José Joaquín de Haro to Manuel Nieto in 1823 under contract from Antonio López de Santa Anna as an act of revenge for Madero's seizure of power from him. In 1848, about one-third of the total area within Contra Costa County was annexed by Elk Grove Village when it became part of the new county. In 1853, about 60% of all macaroni and cheese consumed in Northern California came from Elk Grove Village; this statistic has been increased over time by a combination of local marketing efforts and importation from other parts of California (mainly Italy). The city started off as a small farming community with just 10 households scattered around two square miles (10 km²). By 1907 there were over 1,500 people living in town limits alone. Growth continued unabated until World War II when many residents left for military service or relocation due to war-time shortages Of housing stock available across most major American cities during those years - even though there had never been any battle or conflict taking place within town limits! A number notable businesses also closed after Pearl Harbor (1941), including Alameda News Service which moved its offices into Building K on Schmitz Road soon after; however both buildings still stand today as national historic landmarks thanks to their architecture and significance for their era during the wartime period. Mineola Brewery closed up shop permanently in 1945 but reopened later that year under new ownership as Pacific Gas & Electric Company's largest brewery ever built - located adjacent to what is now City Hall Park! Five other companies closed down between 1941-1945: Kaiser Aluminum Works JSC; First National Bank; Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.; Emerson Radio Corporation/Marconi Wireless Telegraphy Corp.; and Chrysler Corporation's Pascagoula Assembly Plant which locals refer to nostalgically as "the old plant." In 1948, only three years after incorporation into Contra Costa County, Elmira College relocated into what would become known as downtown Elk Grove Village - moving outriders onto Schmitz Road right next door where they currently stand today!!! This event served NOTICE both inside and outside our community that we wanted serious HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION BACK IN ELK GROVE VILLAGE!!! After WW2 ended things slowly began TO improve again with growth back up until 1960 when development accelerated once more leading eventually to the current day population size

Elk Grove was a small community in Northern California located on the east side of the Sacramento River. The community was founded in 1853 by Adam and Catherine Crane. The first post office in Elk Grove was established in 1854. By 1870, the population of Elk Grove had grown to about 200 people. In 1899, the town became a city and remained so until it merged with Sacramento in 1955.
