In 1892, an American Rifle Company factory was established to make rifle rounds, pistol bullets, shotgun rounds, leadshot rounds, and musket balls. This company became part of Remington Arms in 1912. Ammunition production at Remington Arms increased during World War I due to demand from the military. In 1915-1916, they produced 5 million rounds of machine gun ammo alone! After World War I ended, there was yet another increase in ammunition production as Americans discovered new applications for muzzleloader ammo such as target shooting and Trap Shooting. In 1937-1938, Ammunition Manufacturing Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), produced 235 million rounds of .30 caliber rifle ammo alone! During World War II (1939-1945), Winchester again produced large quantities of munitions for the U.S military including artillery shells (heavier than steel) and mortar round projectiles among other items
