El Segundo, California is a small city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. The El Segundo Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been strongly supportive of downtown redevelopment which has created more than 1,000 jobs since 2007. El Segundo's commercial district surrounds Avenida Central and Avenida de la Mesa, while its residential districts include Crescent Park, Playa Vista and Rancho Mirage. Southern Pacific Railroad tracks run through the city center; Amtrak's Coast Starlight Railway stops near the airport. The area now occupied by El Segundo was first settled in 1885 by Mexican Americans who had come to work on the railroad network then being built throughout Southern California. They named their new town after General José María Morelos who had commanded an army during Mexico’s war for independence from Spain. In 1932, when citrus fruit production began to grow rapidly in adjoining Riverside County, questions were raised about whether or not to consolidate oranges into one county so that they could be marketed nationally under one name or unite all seven counties into one with a single market share. A vote was taken to combine both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties into one municipality but voters rejected it 6 to 3 because they wanted their own municipio without any overlap with other municipalities within San Bernardino County or those in Riverside County (Covina included). On July 12, 1936, the two neighboring municipalities were united as El Segundo through an act of the State Legislature – this action followed years of effort by businessmen amassing property around what would become El Seguno Beach Boulevard and Carmel Drive (now known as Avenida Central) and heavy development along Interstate 5 south of I-5 across from Playa Vista High School (now known as Rancho Mirage High School). El Segundo became a reality as a result of efforts by Mayor Héctor Jara (1928–30), Supervisor Manuel Nieto (1935–38), City Councilor Reginald Beasley (1945–48), City Manager John Lisle (1949–53) and Mayor Pete Wilson culminating in passage of Proposition 9 on November 4, 1978 which created a municipal charter requiring approval by referendum before changes could be made to its provisions without prior legislative approval; failed twice before becoming law on December 15 following ratification by 99% of registered voters against no less than twenty-six opposition signatures collected – making it only LA’s second successful attempt at creating self-governing municipal entities since Anglos took control of our government following Californios’ entry into fatherland during World War II On October 1st 2000 3rd density housing developments called “The Village” were approved adjacent to freeway ramps used mainly for local access such as I-5 & US 395 withing walking distance from business areas/restaurants etc... endangering open space/waterfront rights currently leased for military use

The first European settlers in what is now El Segundo were Spanish soldiers who were sent to Tongva Indians for support against Native Americans during the 1769 Mission District invasion of Southern California. In 1821, when Alvarado became governor of Mexico, he granted land east of San Pedro Bay to José Antonio Vargas for settlement by free Latinos as part of Rancho Santa Margarita. In 1826, José Maria Aguirre y Cogollo acquired Rancho San Vicente de la Luz from José Antonio Vargas and named it El Segundo after himself and his brother Manuel (Tomás) ElSegundo (1768-1836), two Mexican patriots who had fought in the Californian War for Independence from Spain. Alvarado sold 640 acres (248 hectares) of rancho to Peter Kieft in 1846 because Kieft could not find buyers for it on account of its remote location near Mount Wilson Observatory . The area was known as "El Sur" or "the south." In 1850, most of what is now El Seguno was included within the independent municipality of Hawthorne . On November 3, 1861 , Hawthorne incorporated as an unincorporated community with a population of just five people
