In 1851 the founder of Paramount Pictures Captains John Davenport and William Haines built a small cabin on Rancho Mirage beach for company executives while they watched goldmines be dug in nearby hills. When production stopped due to lack of finds in 1858, Davenport donated land (now part of Paramount's property) for what would become El Segundo Boulevard which ran parallel to Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Industry boomed during World War II with shipbuilding and aircraft production beginning at Naval Air Station Miramar across PCH from today's Presidio park before moving inland into new facilities at Bel Air and Fullerton Hills near Redondo Beach. After the war ended demand declined but not before East side neighborhoods like North Shoreline Drive became so densely populated they were nicknamed "Little Tokyo". A major fire destroyed much of downtown LA in 1936; this did not stop development though as homes went up along MacArthur Boulevard between First Street and Third Avenue until displacement caused planners to reevaluate priorities during the 1960s when subdivision started becoming more common throughout LA County periphery including El Segundo proper while other areas saw very little change such as Canoga Park east of I-5 or Carson City west adjacent to I-805 despite its large amount of untapped potential oil reserves! This business soon became nationally known for its fresh produce and other items sold under the name "Alameda". By 1920, Alameda had become so successful that Manuel Lopez decided to move his entire operation from downtown El Segundo to what is now located at 4151 Slauson Avenue (formerly Fourth Street). The new location allowed for continued growth for Alameda while still providing customers with quality products at affordable prices. During World War II, Alameda played a critical role as one of Southern California's major producing areas due to its proximity to military installations such as Palmdale Army Airfield and Long Beach Naval Shipyard. During this time period Alameda also experienced rapid growth which culminated in annexation by Los Angeles County in 1971 after years of debate betweencity officials and adjacent agricultural counties about whether or not to annex El Segundo specifically because of its growing population density combined with advances technology like air conditioning which made it possible for businesses like Alameda Village Shopping Center acrossslope open late into the night without having their lights turned off! Despite this rapid expansion during wartime times there were few tears shed over annexation as many people saw it as another way for cities like Los Angeles to take advantage of small towns while they grew larger; ultimately this strategy worked out well for both cities! Today much has changed since incorporation into City Hall back when Main Street ran only two blocks deep; today there are several dozen restaurants scattered around downtown including several high end ones such as L’Atelier de France & Co., Carrabba’s Italian Grill & Steak House – all part of what has come to be known simply as "Downtown." Downtown offers easy access bothto shopping options including luxury brands like Macy’s - just downslope from City Hall - along WITH excellent cultural experiences available throughout year round thanks increasingly TO Downtown LA's popularity among tourists! Ever since Downtown LA first started experiencing explosive growth beginning circa 1990 things have really beguntoggle up big time...the renaissance is HERE!!!
