In 1978, when LAX began serving both cities with single terminals so travelers could easily switch between them without having to go through either city's airports (at then-Sepulveda Boulevard and Imperial Avenue), El Segundo joined LAX as an airport terminal annexe and became known as "El Segundo Airport." On July 1, 1984 - three days after voters approved Measure M which proposed making El Segundo an independent city - Mayor Sergio Martinez proclaimed "El Segunito" or "City Of The Sun" following his slogan "From Dusk Till Dawn: We're Here To Stay". On September 2dy 1984 City Council adopted Resolution No 002 adopting a new name for the city; ""El Segunito"" or ""City Of The Sun"" until further notice due to growing opposition from residents who did not want their municipality renamed after movie star Michael Douglas (who had earlier unsuccessfully unsuccessfully campaigned for mayor). On October 3rd 1984 Michael Douglas won election against incumbent Sergio Martinez by wide margin becoming facto Mayor with full powers to rename municipality should he become ineligible because he had served less than two years since being elected instead of four years like Martinez had originally planned...Michael Douglas effectively re-named City Of El Segunitto/Sunnyvale effective November 1st 1984
