Rosenwald developed what are now some of the most expensive homes east of Los Angeles into an upscale community known for its wide variety of stores and restaurants including fine dining establishments such as Saks Fifth Avenue and L’Atelier de France along with high-end department stores such as Macy's and Sears Roebuck & Co., making it one of Southern California's leading shopping destinations at the time. Rosenwald funded much development through his foundation which purchased large tracts of land throughout southern California. He also built two golf courses: one near Mission Bay on Seal Beach Boulevard and another inland at San Marino River Park near Interstate 5. Over time other developers followed suit with many projects totaling over 100 acres being undertaken throughout downtowns across Los Angeles County during this period By 1979 there were over 350 businesses operating Downtown El Secundo employing nearly 2,000 people(Hank Daly) who served as Chairman emeritus while others continue their leadership roles within these businesses today.
