El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It was incorporated on November 1, 1905. The population was 97,752 at the 2010 census. El Segundo is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles and shares borders with Pasadena to the north and Culver City to the east. The first European settlers in what is now El Segundo were Spanish Maleconians who arrived in 1795 as part of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army during his campaign against Mexico. They built small adobe huts on Rancho San Vicente de la Mesa (now known as Rancho La Brea) near present-day Interstate 5 and Sepulveda Boulevard. The area now known as El Segundo was granted land around 1836 by Manuel Nieto of Carpinteria for military purposes only; he named it after José Joaquín Elías Cerón, captain general of Mexican forces leading an unsuccessful attack upon Mexico City from Orange County during 1835-1836. Cerón's troops may also have named the creek that flows through downtown today after him: Tejas Creek. On October 1, 1905, two days after incorporation into Los Angeles County,[1] El Segundo became an unincorporated community within Los Angeles city limits when its ZIP code was surveyed at 10271.[2][3] After years of effort by residents and businesses to gain annexation into city limits—including a citizens' referendum in 1911[4]),[5] On September 25, 1920,[6] and then again on July 29, 1922,[7] City Council voted 3-0 to annex all of southern Beverly Hills eastward to form a new municipality called "El Segundo". This annexation resulted in one hundred percent growth for the town over the next decade due largely to influxes of workers from nearby Hollywood seeking better job prospects than available in their old homecity or villages such assouth Beverly Hills had to offer.[8][9][10][11] By 1935 there were more people living inEl Segundo than any other place inside or outside LA county.[12][13][14] During World War II many people leftfor war service but soon returned when hostilities ended; most notably Jack Kemp who served as Mayor from 1945 until his election loss in 1994; boosters maintain this designation because much property along Ventura Boulevard south from Garden Street (the original location where Kemp lived) remained undeveloped until that time due mainly to lack of development interest among local officials followingWWII veterans' return home
