The first town in this area was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his men on October 26, 1542 when they landed on what is now known as Isla de la Juventud (Island of Youth). The first post office in El Segundo opened in 1874. The first shopping mall in Southern California was built here in 1969 called "Eldorado". Today's Eldorado Park Shopping Center has over 150 stores and restaurants including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney and KFC. It is located in Southern California's Hillsborough region and is bordered by Newport Beach to the north and Laguna Beach to the south. The name "El Segundo" comes from Spanish for "the second mile." The city began as an agricultural community near what are now Interstate 5 and State Route 91 (now I-5 Freeway). In 1887, two brothers named Hiram S. Chisolm developed a salt mine at what is now El Segundo Boulevard and Imperial Highway. In 1912, improvements were made to Interstate 5 which allowed for growth outside of agriculture; El Segundo became an important commercial center with its own streetcars and buses. In 1940, when El Seguno was incorporated as a city, it had a population of just over 100 people. During World War II, El Segundo played an important role in the war effort with its many military installations including Naval Air Station Miramar (later Naval Air Station Seal Beach) on Isla Vista beach. After the war ended in 1945, El Seguno experienced significant economic growth due to dramatic increases in truck traffic along I-5 which passed through town limits into Malibu Creek Valley behind it. These changes led to increased social tensions between residents of adjacent neighborhoods that have since been ameliorated by Measures Z1 and Z2 passed by City Council in 2000 and 2004 respectively. Today's economy is based primarily on services such as health care and tourism but there are also some industrial activities such as production of plastics
