The first magazines to be designed specifically for the purpose of holding firearms were Colt's Model 1851 and Winchester's Model 1873. The early pistols that were chambered in .22 caliber used magazine-fed revolvers, but these pistols had to be reloaded multiple times a day (and often required the use of two hands). In 1871, John F. Browning patented his design for a single-shot handgun that could fire rounds through a threaded barrel into an ammunition clip. This pistol became known as the Browning Rifle. In 1903, Chubb & Cook created the world's first self-loading rifle magazine with four rounds per magazine. It was called the "Chubb Enfield". The Enfield was soon replaced by other types of rifles with magazine-fed systems such as the BAR (British Assault Rifle) and American M1 Carbine. Magazine fed weapons continued to become more popular until they were finally superseded by automatic firearms in most countries during World War II.
El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 153,746 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west side of Los Angeles and is part of the Downtown Los Angeles area. The first Europeans to visit El Segundo were surveyors working for Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542–43 when he explored what is now Orange County. In 1795, José María Narváez de la Serna claimed land west of the Santa Monica Mountains for Spain and named it "El Segundo" after his hometown of Seville in Andalusia, Spain. A year later Antonio Cisneros y Costilla founded an orange orchards near present-day Venice Beach. From 1821 to 1836, Las Olas Creek formed a natural boundary between San Diego and Pasadena counties; during this time, El Segundo was part of Pasadena county. In 1837, about 50% of the men working on Rancho Rincon del Norte (later Rancho La Brea) deserted because they were promised land east of Lake Arrowsmith but no grants came through and some claim that they were taken against their will. Some say that they may have been betrayed by one or more members of their group who went off with rich rewards while others say that there may have been fraudulence involved as well as personal greed among those responsible for giving out land parcels without proper consideration for its potential uses or feasibility. From 1865 until 1880 much development took place within El Segundo boundaries including large numbers of Feature Film Actors' Laboratory employees living in small studios around Hollywood Boulevard which led eventually to movie theaters dotting every corner in town center becoming known as "the Strip." These developments caused many people who lived within city limits to leave for greener pastures although business continued operations albeit at a reduced level until 1914 when production shifted from motion pictures to television production due largely to advances made by CBS Corporation during World War I which interrupted demand for filmed entertainment across America resulting in mass layoffs at Lab workers throughout Hollywood including many residents who lost their jobs leading some locals to call themselves "The Lost Generation". During Prohibition most alcohol production ceased although bootlegging still took place outside city limits though local transportation became available such as bar cars running along Ventura Boulevard specializing in smuggling liquor down into Southern California via these routes supplemented by larger boats used primarily for smuggling cigarettes inland instead mainline train service having ended passenger traffic along downtown LA lines with only freight trains serving western terminus until mid-1930s when both Western Terminal Railroad Company switching trackage from Union Pacific Railroad right up through downtown LAS Terminal Street Railway Yard onto modern First Avenue Subway Line making El Seguno finally accessible by car following new routing opened 1863 with original line terminating at Harbor Freight Terminal on Harbor Drive southwest of downtown providing excellent access not only into town but also outlying communities such as Seal Beach waterfront community northsouth Of Town Center where streetcar service resumed after prohibition ended 1953 As early as 1912 real estate developer Harry Brouncker had submitted plans calling for a shopping center adjoining University Park adjacent current day City Hall location just inside eastbound Sepulveda Boulevard/Lawrence Expressway entrance approximately on lot now occupied by Peebles Chapel homeless shelter however failed to gain support from Mayor Fletcher over objections raised by other developers interested in opening same site within city limits rather than provide commercial corridor directly linking Downtown/University Park areas thus never materialized despite efforts dating back several years prior thereto According to historian John Giannini article published In 2003 entitled 'City Limits: Historic Development Along Sepulveda Blvd.'Brouncker's plan was ultimately realized 10 years later when City Hall moved closer to University Park opening up much needed commercial Corridor linking Downtown/University Park areas thus finally materializing despite efforts dating back several years prior thereto). On October 30th 1908 Mayor Fletcher signed Resolution No. 218 authorizing the purchase and condemnation (purchase meaning acquisition)of two acres adjacent Peebles Chapel homeless shelter on behalf of then newly created City College District #2 comprising all unincorporated territory lying northeasterly extending thence along present day Lankershim Boulevard from its junction with Arroyo Seco Parkway (now Interstate 5), easterly along present day Westchester Avenue thence northwesterlyalong present day Yucca Trail creek bed parallel theretoto meet said Arroyo Seco Parkway (now Interstate 5) just inside eastbound Sepulveda Boulevard/Lawrence Expressway entrance approximately herein before existing Lankershim Boulevard junction now occupied by Peebles Chapel homeless shelter; cost $5200 plus per acre taxes assessed thereon originally amounting total sum payable thereon plus interest & penalties $4000 per annum ($10K over 10 years)?(This resolution authorized expenditures not yet final totaling $105K since Purchase price included costs associated with surveys & engineering work required before actual sale could be accepted); note: This particular transaction was never completed due apparently lack of approvals from then Mayor Fletcher) . The property remained undeveloped until 1949 when City College District #2 merged with UCLA school district creating what is today called UCLA Campus .
