Later that same year, Danish engineer Ole Christensen created a portable lamp called an "Ole Jensen Lamp." This instrument could be used both night and day when carried by officers on their patrols to assist them in finding fugitives or seizing suspects before they could escape justice. In 1857, American chemist George Stephenson developed an electric battery operated lantern based on his earlier oil- lamps that could be placed anywhere within range of an electrified wire fence line while emitting sparks from their burning wick in order to indicate distance traveled by trespassers or other criminals attempting to break into a farmhouse at nightfall. And finally, Johann Friedrich Siemens & Halske introduced the modern concept of gun light in 1859 when they produced what is now considered the world’s first compact flashlights – Model D – which consisted of two handheld carbon arc tubesmounted on durable metal arms capable of producing up to 100 lumens each while mounted above a flexible prismatic lens for superior visibility at close range; these devices were originally designed exclusively for police work and search operations during nighttime hours

It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Compton and it is also one of the most racially diverse cities in America. The two largest ethnic groups are Latinos (who make up approximately 60%) and Asians (of which there are over 20% who identify as Asian). There are also sizable numbers of Caucasians and African Americans living in El Segundo. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now El Segundo were Spanish travelers exploring southern California in 1542 when they discovered land that would become Orange County. In 1802, Juan Bautista de Anza explored what is now downtown Los Angeles and named it "Mendoza". This name may have been derived from an Indian term meaning "good place for sheep" because of its rich soil. In 1876, Eduardo Montoya y Salinas granted 160 acres (60 hectares) of land just east of downtown to Juana Sanchez Castro for her son-in-law's use as a Rancho San Vicente del Progreso Mexican Land grant which became part of the City ofLos Angeles on November 5, 1912. On January 1, 1909, with the admission into California of more than 100 million people – including 50% non-white – El Segundo officially became a municipality within Los Angeles County with a population of 25,000 residents on December 17th surveyors had reported to fill out plat forms for all unincorporated areas west of Hollywood Boulevard; this area extended from Lancaster Avenue north to Topanga Boulevard east to Atlantic Avenue south . On February 2nd 1909 by resolution from Mayor James Hahn approved by voters it was proposed that annexation be made punishable only by taxation not by incorporation where such annexation would result in loss or forfeiture either outright or through eminent domain seizure without due process other than enclosure within limits prescribed by regulation under state law so long as said boundaries were never crossed without proper notice or protest having been given pursuant to law; accordingly incorporation was recommended but failed 8-2 voting against incorporation pending further study and reconsideration according to Resolution No 418 dated March 4th 1912 drafted by Hiram Dahlenbeck mayor then Assistant Manager of Planning Department under Commissioner Olaf Stoecker who stated "…it has come about that some citizens feel that their interests do not coincide with those representedby incorporated municipalities herein … let us see if we can solve this problem before too much damage is done." According to local historian Dee Brown: "It's hard not justto remember them [the incorporations] because they meant so much but also because there wasn't really much else going on around here back then." The City Council did pass an ordinance ratifying Annexation on October 21st 1912 adopting resolutions adopted earlier authorizing annexation should such action be taken outside the regular legislative session thereby abolishing any possibility for secession similar thereto existing in neighboring towns annexed since 1907." From 1910 until 1935 no taxes were levied on properties inside the city limits while annexed properties paid assessments dating back to 1902 based upon square footage rather than current lot size making annexation an automatic exercise for any property reaching such limit
