El Segundo, California is a city in Southern California. The population was 36,816 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and the second-most populous city in Orange County after Irvine. The first Europeans to visit El Segundo were Spanish missionaries on their way to missions in San Diego and Santa Ana. They built a Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico on Canoga Avenue in 1810. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1857, but replaced by another mission, Mission Dolores (1897), which still stands today. In 1862, American soldiers burned down part of the original Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico for looting during the Mexican–American War. A newMission San Gabriel Arcangelico was built on Canoga Avenue and named for Sts Angeles (the patron saint of Los Angeles) and Agustín de la Caja (Agustín de la Cruz y Isla). In 1867, this newMission became known as Holy Cross Cathedral when it became affiliated with Rome’s Catholic Church. When Los Angeles was founded as a town in 1861, El Segundo had no residents or businesses other than three Indian traders who lived off trading goods they collected from Native Americans along what is now Harbor Boulevard between Alameda and Mulholland Avenues. By 1872, however, many people living near present-day Harbor Boulevard began coming into town to work on grading land for expanding LAPA Colony housing estates that would be developed later inside the City of Los Angeles proper by Hollywood moguls such as Cecil B DeMille and others whose enterprises brought large numbers of workers into El Segundo starting about 1920 or earlier
Eliot Ness was born in El Segundo, California on November 3, 1895. He attended high school there and then the University of Michigan. Ness played football for the Wolverines from 1915 to 1917 and was captain of the 1916 team. After playing football for Michigan, he became a lawyer and served as assistant district attorney in Los Angeles from 1923 to 1929. From 1930 to 1932 he was a judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court. Ness then moved to New York City and became an investment banker. In 1935 he married his first wife, Jane Wyman; they had two children before she died in 1939. In 1940 he married his second wife,Susan Brown; they had four children before she died in 1945. In 1947 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Reporting for The Rise and Fall of Nixon (the first ever award given to a journalist).
