The history of El Segundo began with European settlers who arrived during the 1800s looking for land to purchase or develop along the fertile San Fernando Valley soil. The first European settler named John Cook came ashore from his ship Caron on July 5th, 1871 and purchased 3 acres (10,000 m2) south of present-day El Segundo Boulevard from José Francisco Valdez de la Cruz at what is now known as Mission Road and Reseda Boulevard. Cook named his new settlement after himself - Santa Fe de la Vega - although it would not be until many years later that other Europeans discovered this valley and started developing its resources such as citrus fruits and vineyards; they only did so because they were able to discountvalued acreage belonging to Juan Bautista Alvarado, who owned much of southern Orange County but no land within Los Angeles proper boundaries. In 1915 Rancho Cucamonga became part of newly formed Los Angeles County when portions of Orange County were annexed by Pasadena while Malibu Peninsula remained unincorporated under Mexican rule pending naturalization ceremonies for its citizens which never took place due to hostilities between Mexico City and Los Angeles between 1861-1865 which ended with Mexico's capitulation at Monterrey following Ulysses S Grant's successful March 4th Invasion Of Mexico (1865). El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 56,813 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast and bordered by Orange County to the east and San Diego County to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now El Segundo were traders from Peru who landed there in 1769 on ships commanded by Gaspar de Portolà. They named the place after Elias Calderón, captain of a Spanish ship that had made landfall off Santa Catalina Island about two weeks earlier. Captain Calderón had followed up Portolà's voyage with his own exploring party and named Santa Catalina Island Islet after Father Francisco de Vallejo, rector of La Laguna Mission (now part of Huntington Beach). At this time, all of what is now Los Angeles Counties was part of Alta California under Mexican rule. In 1821, United States citizens David Dixon Andrus and John Sutter acquired Rancho Cahuenga from Mexico for $1 million. In 1835 they sold it to Fernando Woodbridge who built an orange groves orchard here that remains one of Southern California's most important businesses today. The grove produced over 100 million oranges a year until World War II when it was destroyed by fire; however, the tree-based fruit has never been replaced by another food product in Southern California history. During World War II many servicemen stationed at Naval Air Station Miramar constructed airfields around El Segundo including North American Aviation Station Miramar which became Hollywood Airport after World War II ended. Many other people such as Ray Stevens also lived and worked here during those years including Don Rickles who developed an amusement park called Rickles Wonderland near downtown El Segundo which still exists today as an amusement park known for its butterbeer attractions and Mardi Gras celebrations
