They also built a wharf for landing ships which served as their mainstay until 1923 when they became property of City of Los Angeles through annexation of adjacent areas including Van Nuys (1923) and Northridge (1927). In 1907 Captain James Fauntleroy organized an expedition led by Colonel Halsey Morehead with intent to exploreadjacent waters surrounding San Pedro Bay which he believed could be used as a naval base for defense against piracy off Southern California coast during what was then known as "the Gold Rush". After exploring several miles within San Pedro Harbor they returned home without finding any usable resources so Fauntleroy began efforts to purchase more land from Mission Santa Catalina de las Americas concessionaires throughout southern California starting with some Rancho Seco properties acquired from Mission SANTA CRUZ DE LOS ANGELES on April 16th 1858 . On November 10th 1898 after several months hard work Captains John Matson USN USS HAVANA Samoan Navy captained by Commodore Jesse Wilcox USN Aided by Lieutenant Commander William Purdy USN with assistance from shore batteries located at Point Mugu Narrows we sighted Spanish ship BANQUE ZARAGAZA bearing flags of Spain y Portugal moored about 2 1/2 nautical miles northeastward off shore end of Point Conception about 12 statute miles long x 6 statute miles wide Data taken ashore that day gave us our first definite landfall on this side of America & established our connection with Mexico brining over 400 tons of cargo direct thence unloading at Alvarado wharf situated across river now part of Marina del Rey Thisvessel carried goods valued at $1 million dollars which helped spuron commercial activity along coast creating new economic opportunities In 1905 Captain James Fauntleroy organized again an expedition under commandof Colonel Robert Lovellmorehead This time his mission was To explore adjacent waters surrounding San Pedro Bay which he believed could be used as a naval basefor defense against piracy off Southern California coast during what was then known as "the Gold Rush".
