El Segundo is a small city in Los Angeles County, California and the seat of El Segundo Union School District. The population was 105,754 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Southern California's San Fernando Valley. The first Europeans to visit what is now El Segundo were Spanish missionaries, who named it after Seguin (now Santa Clara) in Chile. Other early settlers included Indians andChinese laborers who helpediled in the goldfields of southeastern California during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Town status was granted to El Segundo on December 12, 1912 by then-Mayor Arthur J. Wolkowitz under United States Patent No. 598,851. In 1925, Mayor Wolkowitz appointed Drury Crain as town physician; he served until his death in 1928. In that year also arrived Druey Hickey from Burbank as first female examiner for public school inspections in Los Angeles County; she taught night classes until her retirement in 1961. On October 17, 1922 Edward Sayers became owner and operator of The Standard Oil Company's refinery on Pico Boulevard northwest of town limits; he began production there of gasoline and kerosene for local use on November 15 (the day before Thanksgiving). At its peak during World War II, El Segundo had a population of over 100,000 people employed in all aspects of war production: munitions plants such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation’s Palmdale plant; shipyards like Kaiser Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company’s Long Beach facility; armories such as Consolidated Aircraft Corp.'s Fullerton plant; automotive assembly plants at Imperial Chemical Industries' Wilmington plant (later moved to Pomona); and chemical warfare factories including Proctor-Gammon Chemical Works’ overseas project at Ismailiyeh Airfield near Baghdad Airport - all within easy commuting distance from one another through nearby cities such as Pasadena or Scripps Ranch. Additionally, many talented civilians worked on military projects not related to warfare - such as engineering research conducted at Warner Bros.' new studio building east of town limits known then as Western Electric Building #4 - which helped contribute significantly to wartime growth and development throughout Southern California."
