It was founded on November 10, 1885 by Italians who had fled Italy during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The city's nickname is "The City of the Seas" because it is home to one of the only freeways in Southern California and has been an important transportation and commercial center since the early 20th century. Today, El Segundo's economy is based largely on its location as a shopping and entertainment center for neighboring San Diego County and Southern California's inland population. The city has seen significant growth in recent years due to its access to Interstate 5 and other major highways, as well as its status as a bedroom community for coastal residents in search of affordable housing. El Segundo is a small town located in San Diego County, California. The population was 22,534 at the 2010 census. El Segundo is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "El Segundo" means "the second town." The first permanent settler in what is now El Segundo was George Aiken who arrived in 1848. He named his new land after his home state of Rhode Island and built a cabin on a hilltop overlooking the harbor. Aiken's log cabin still stands today and overlooks the harbor where he made his first landing. By 1860, there were over 20 settlers living in El Segundo. By 1870, many more had come to townsite including John Sikes who built the first store on Harbor Drive and started selling goods including groceries, saddles, boots and other farm supplies from his establishment which became known as the Sikes Store. In 1875 Jens Jensen opened up a grocery store next door to Sikes Store along with two other stores - one called The Grapes that served wine and food products; and another called The Hermitage that sold hardware, groceries, clothing and general merchandise. In 1916 lumber baron Al Capone established himself in nearby Encinitas when he moved from Chicago to open an engineering office for American Mining Corporation (AMC). One of AMC's projects was to build a dam across San Dieguito Creek which would provide power for their mills in Encinitas. When word got out about this project local farmers began offering subscriptions for access to discounted rates on their produce when they went into town for water purposes or during dry spells because without power mills couldn't operate safely! This early involvement by local businesses led to what is now known as El Segundo's strong community spirit which has kept alive its downtown core since before World War II when most of what is now downtown was rural farmland used for military airfields or naval shipsyards during World War II while much of present-day downtown remained rural until 1990 when development pressures combined with low interest rates caused most industrial buildings to be replaced by condominium/ highrise development instead! After years of planning by city officials; retail shops reopened along First Street between Broadway & Ocean Avenue; parklands were created around First Street & Harbor Drive (including Park Boulevard); finally arterial streets were brought into alignment leaving only major thoroughfares such as Broadway & Ocean Avenue undeveloped due primarily to demand from residents who desired easy access shopping center potential just east of First Street! nicknamed "The Promenade" once it became evident that even if these streets did become developed they would more than likely remain widthless given current traffic patterns) Downtown business owners worked hard attracted developers such as Lennar Developers Incorporated (later Lennar Communities) which purchased all but four blocks along First Street between Broadway & Ocean Avenue beginning with block #1 on July 17th 1990 renamed Plaza de la Gloria y Salud following Hispanic Day Parade; plaza features upscale restaurants modern architecture with many exposed structural members making it an attractive site for commercial use potentially leading to redevelopment adjacent future Interstate 5 freeway running through this area! Up until recently much activity occurred near I-5 coming off Beach Boulevard however recent developments have pushed most development east away from I-5 onto avenues such as Park Boulevard creating opportunities for residential/retail uses centered around Mission Bayou
