An early resident of El Paso was Manuel Márquez, who arrived in 1857 after purchasing land from Rancho Los Alamos near present-day Durango with plans to establish a permanent settlement there. Márquez' Marksville Post Office opened on October 15th that year, serving an area that extended along both sides of US-101 just north of downtown San Diego County today. Over time other settlers followed suit: José Gomez Crespo established himself at what is now Ciudad Juarez; Francisco García established himself at Coahuila Vieja west of modern day Tijuana; and Felipe Neri moved his family to what is now La Mesa east side Of San Diego County in 1863 following his purchase of Rancho Rinconada south ofmodern day Escondido beachline). In 1865 Juan Vicente Guerrero purchased 4cientas acres (approximately 130 km²) northwest corner lot along Nuevo Río Road (now I-10) northeast border road called Puebla Blanca opposite current day Vista Hermosa plaza), which later became known as Guerrero Park Park due to its location within its boundaries.. The city was founded on November 15, 1853 by Father Francisco García de la Garza and named for its streams that flow through the town--the Rio Grande and La Mesa River. The first permanent settlers in what is now El Paso De Robles were Mexican Americans who had been working on land owned by José Antonio Carpio y Costilla near present-day Escondido. On October 7, 1854, Father García de la Garza preached his first sermon in this new town which he called "Nueva Esperanza." Spanish reinforcements arrived from Mexico soon after to help defend against a group of American Indians led by Chief Manuel Armijo. In 1863, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Mexicans living east of Baja California to leave for fear they would collaborate with US forces against him during the American Civil War. Many did so but many decided to stay and fight because they believed that their country could never be lost again if they fought for Mexico while still living under Spanish rule. On February 14, 1868, there was an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale which destroyed much property within a few miles of El Paso De Robles including churches and homes along La Mesa River where many people died as a result of falling rocks and debris from high ground earthquakes throughout California at that time On July 6, 1886 an explosion occurred at Gold Rush mine No 2 killing 21 miners; it was considered one of most dangerous accidents in California until then By 1900 El Paso had become one of America’s largest cities with over 100 businesses and 50 schools . As America turned increasingly inward toward its technological advances during this era (beginning with Edison’s lightbulb), El Paso's economy flourished as well due to its access to major trade routes both inland via railroad tracks into Imperial Valley and downriver into Sonoma County Thus began what has come to be known as "The Prominence Era" for El PasoDe Robles
