El Paso De Robles is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 17,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in El Paso de Robles were the Cahuilla and Ahwahnee peoples who arrived from central Mexico about 1540 CE. They built villages on hills overlooking the river below until 1821 when Mexican troops burned down their villages and drove them away. The area now called El Paso de Robles was given its name from Rancho Las Tunas, which was granted to José Joaquin Herrera in 1827. In 1848, two brothers named Henry contributed $5,000 towards building Alisal College which became Southern California's first university. In 1851 El Paso de Robles became part of what is now Riverside County after it was approved by Mexico as part of a disputed land grant during the Mexican War of Independence. At that time there were only a few settlements in San Bernardino County and most of it was undeveloped wilderness inhabited by nomadic Indians such as the Ohlone and Mono tribes who hunted and gathered food from the mountains near Antelope Valley and Lake Arrowsmith. The town began to form slowly around 1850 with three small ranchos (and later several more) located along then existing Indian trails leading into Los Angeles County: Rancho Aguajejo (1853), Socorro (1854), Chino Hills (1856). By 1860 there were 10 buildings and 100 residents in El Paso de Robles; all but one being ranches run by Spanish American Company employees or family members of these men. One result of this slow growth may have been an attempt by some local officials to maintain order BY keepingTRACKING THE NATIVE AMERICANS - something they could do because they had no legal title to any real property within those boundaries On July 26th 1862 A Lone Rider Cavalry Captain Edward Haltz ordered all military forces at Big Piney Creek stop short due to rumors that some natives had attacked a white soldier; out cameTHE ARROWSHOT RIFLE GUARDS! A large fire ensued resulting in 3 dead & 11 wounded including 2 Captains Haltz himself & his garrison commander Lieutnante Josefina Ortiz... both men died soon thereafter from their wounds at Big Piney creek bed . . . so great wasthe panic caused by this event that many people fled for their lives leaving their homes behind…………”
