El Paso De Robles is a small town located in the Mojave Desert, about an hour east of Los Angeles and three hours north of Vegas. The population was 7,501 at the 2010 census. The name El Paso De Robles means "The crossing of the river". It is thought that this name was given to the community by early Spanish settlers as they were traveling between Las Vegas and California during their exploratory missions in 1821-22. The first permanent settler in what is now El Paso De Robles was Antonio Ruiz, who arrived in 1827. He built a trading post on the confluence of two rivers, which he named San Diego de los Años XIX (or San Diego Rancho Viejo). In 1848, George Crespo came to El Paso from Mexico and purchased Ruiz's property. He founded an agricultural ranch called Rancho Aguila y Rosales near present day downtown El PasoDe Robles on December 16, 1848. From here he started to develop some winegrowing operations around his new holdings. In 1850 Manuel Nieto also came overland from Temecula and opened a wagon trade route between Temecula and Los Angeles up the Kings Canyon corridor. This trade brought him into contact with several prominent people including Simeon Bockenhauer who invited him to come live with him at his palacio de las Golondrinas near present day Cathedral City in 1888. From here he began making trips across northern California selling goods bought back on his return trip Olancha Valley Road today's I- 10 east of downtown Los Angeles By 1865 there were over 50 Anglo families living along what is now I-10 south of downtown El PasoDe Robles Junction where it joins US 95W just west of Mojave National Preserve for about 12 miles before rejoining US 95A about 8 miles later becoming US 95W again continuing until it leaves Mojave National Preserve near present day Coachella Valley Thereafter many farmers moved into this area looking for easy access to water supplies for irrigation purposes horses were ranches used for transportation carrying goods all over orchards irrigated citrus groves became big business cattle ranchers produced valuable beef products such as mutton and chuckwagon meat
