El Paso De Robles, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population of the town was estimated to be around 50,000 as of 2010. The town is known for its cowboy culture and has been called "The Cowboy Capital of the World." The first gun case in El Paso De Robles was built by George W. Hennessey in 1892. The Hennessey Gun Case Manufacturing Company made guns for the American Frontier and other countries during the 19th century. The first European to visit El Paso de Robles was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. Spanish traders and explorers visited here for years before permanent settlement began in 1847 with the arrival of José Antonio Mejía from Mexico City. On July 14, 1848, Mexican General Ramón Vigil erected his military post at what is now known as Mission Concepción del Rio Grande about two miles northeast of present-day El Paso de Robles. The site became known as Fort Mariano because it was where Mexican Army General Mariano Pico built a artillery piece during his November 21st campaign against Californios south of San Francisco Bay. A few weeks later, on December 10th,1848, Mission Concepción became an Argentinean lighthouse after being purchased bydraguerreatee Captain Manuel Nieto from Governor José Joaquín Obregon y Valdez for $5200 1/2d per catalejo or $100 per year In 1863 Colonel John Waddell's Brigade attacked Presidio La Cañada and drove out most of the Californios garrison but were repulsed near today's Dos Palos Creek crossing which they named "Waldo's Ford". American forces under Brigadier General James Fenton destroyed Santa Clara Convent April 25th 1865during the final engagements of Alta California Campaign (1865-1867). During this engagement all but one building within modern day El Paso de Robles were destroyed including mission Concepción del Rio Grande tower which still stands today next to Doña Ana County Courthouse complex facing Main Street
The area now known as El Paso De Robles was first populated in the late 1800s by Native Americans. The first European to inhabit this area was Juan Rodriguez, who came across the region in 1833. In 1846, Mexico ceded this land, including El Paso De Robles, to the United States of America. This event helped spur the California Gold Rush and made El Paso De Robles a major stop on wagon trains heading westward. The town gradually grew and prospered until it became an incorporated city in 1902. The population of El Paso De Robles peaked at over 20,000 in 1910 and declined thereafter; however, it continued to experience growth throughout the 1920s and 1930s. By 1940, only 5% of its population remained within the city limits. However, due to its strategic location overlooking Interstate 10 and its rich cultural heritage, El Paso De Robles remains one of California's most popular tourist destinations today.
