El Paso De Robles is a small town in southwestern California, about an hour's drive from downtown San Francisco. It is the most northerly community in California and the most southerly community in the US. The name comes from the Spanish word "el paso", meaning "the crossing." The first European to visit El Paso was Diego Gutierrez, who set up shop here in 1769. In 1827, Captain Fenton of USS Constitution anchored at anchor on the river's east bank while exploring southern California. He saw a large village of Indians and asked them what they were doing there. One of their chiefs said: "We are going to cross over to see if we can find a place better adapted for our climate here." A few weeks later, Fenton returned with news that he had found a site for an American settlement on the other side of the river, and that this was to be called San Francisco de Asís (now part of Berkeley). Because it was so close to Mexican territory, Governor Manuel Miranda decided against building there and ordered Fenton to return home. In 1849-50 two teams of Americans built Fort Point on Point Reyes Peninsula northeast of San Francisco; one team led by Captain John Sutter arrived on July 25th while the other team led by Commodore James Kenedy arrived four days later. On October 16th Commodore David Dixon sailed his brig USS Discovery into El Paso Harbor after making landfall near Cape Mendocino County in Northern California; heading downriver towards Monterey Bay where he hoped to find gold mines but stopped short due to bad weather and headed back upriver instead. After reaching Monterey Bay on November 2nd Dixon sailed his vessel northward again only until December 22nd when he finally sighted land off Alameda Island; from this point forward Dixon was looking for land rather than sea as it would prove difficult navigate through those waters during wintertime because no shipping could arrive or leave without hitting sandbars or rocks! On January 1st 1850 Mexico acquired jurisdiction over much of Californias interior including present day Sonoma County when Mexico ceded its remaining lands west of Bodega Bay (including today's Marin County) as part of Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended Mexican–American War #2. This left El Paso De Robles with just 8 miles wide strip along both banks of Río Grande River which became known as The Gadsden Strip because so many settlers attempted unsuccessfully to establish homes there during these years without success due to lack of water resources and high cost associated with irrigation systems required for agriculture which then relied heavily upon water diverted from Fluvial Valley watersheds located east/northeast beyond today’s Fresno County [1]. With less than 10 acres available for settlement all efforts at homesteading failed until around 1870 when ranchers John Cohan (1825-1911), Wm Henschel (1832-1909), Charles Goodyear (1837-1920), John Pappas (1855-1924) started construction on what became known as Rancho Rinconada[2] some 15 miles southeast El Paso De Robles where they finally succeeded in establishing permanent residence in 1876 although it took another dozen years before prices began appreciating sufficiently enough financially[3].
The town of El Paso De Robles, California was founded in 1847 by Mormon settlers. The community grew rapidly due to its location and fertile soil. By 1860, the town had a population of over 100 people. El Paso de Robles became an important transportation hub for the region due to its connection to the north, east and south.
