This company developed some of the earliest large-scale surface goldmining operations in California and soon became a powerful force within American mining communities throughout the region. By 1912 over fifty years had passed since they started mining; however production stopped due to strikes among their workers and competition from other companies operating larger mine sites deeper into Mexico’s interior during this time period In 1948-1949 two major floods hit this area: “Flood No 2” that destroyed numerous homes and businesses including those belonging to local leaders Dona Lupe Martinez (wife of José Martinez) Dona Margarita Zamora (widow of Pio Zamora), Sr., Mrs./Govt. Manuel Guerra y Costillaand many others whose loss has never been fully assessed; “Flood No 1” which caused damage estimated at $20 million dollars Alluvial deposits along streambanks were extensively eroded exposing underlying silver/garnet ore fields dating back to pre- Contact times totaling perhaps 10 billion years old! In these Precambrian soils lay vast amounts not only silver but also lead, zinc, manganese, chromium and other minerals including rare gems such as turquoise and topaz! These ounces would have generated an annual income for centuries had conditions not changed so drastically with development… still today some 500 plus jobs are supported directly or indirectly by these resources alone! Today there are no major industry operations taking place within walking distance Of any residences or business buildings but there are several minor shops/restaurants adjacent To busy I-5 exit & various agricultural activities take place Across various rural roadsides
