It is the seat of Pima County and is surrounded by Temecula Canyon to the north, Antelope Valley to the east, and Imperial Valley to the south. The city was founded in 1846 by Stephen F. Austin as Fort Alamo on the banks of San Antonio Creek. It became part of El Paso County when it was created from portions of Webb County in 1912. The city has a population of over 150,000 people and is home to several universities including El Paso Community College and Texas State University-El Paso.
