El Monte is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,574 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and is adjacent to Riverside County. The first European to visit what is now El Monte was Antonio da Cucamonga on October 14, 1562. Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1771, and by 1821 El Monte had also been established as a pueblo with its own government. A smallpox pandemic that swept across Southern California during the mid-19th century killed many residents ofMission San Gabriel Arcángel and el Monte but did not touch other settlements in the valley until after 1876 when smallpox vaccination campaigns were initiated there by Dr. Clementsgold of Philadelphia (later Ulysses S. Grant). The post office at el monte started serving residents of both towns on October 25, 1860; however it only opened for mail service on November 1st due to lack of an adequate building back then. The first postmaster was Hiram Bogan who served from 1860-1864 . The current Post Office Building has been constructed since 1913 and replaced an earlier structure which burned down in 1906. In 1915 local mill owner John D'Arcy donated land to be used for college football practice fields near his home; today's Rose Bowl stadium is located on this site. Construction began in 1923 and finished two years later when Northridge High School moved into its new facility which included a gymnasium, track or field facility and football coaching offices on campus! During World War II (1941-1945) large munitions plants were built in nearby Riverside County including Pahoehoe Arsenal which produced thousands of tons of bombs while military personnel trained here; today’s weapons manufacturing plant produces ammunition for various NATO countries as well as domestic use here within El Monte community itself! Today much has changed within the community since those early days including changes brought about by technology like cell phones and computers which have impacted all facets of life including education opportunities etc... freeway construction such as I-10/I-215 interchange addition (2006), growth in neighboring cities such as Claremont Pomona annexed by El Monte making it difficult to maintain high levels of housing stock without causing displacement especially outside city limits where property values have gone up 50%+ since annexation!!! All things considered though many aspects remain largely unchanged with some exceptions like excellent public transportation available right outside city limits via bus or train

El Monte is a city located in the El Monte Hills region of southern Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 33,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Gabriel Valley and has been a small farming and ranching community since before it became part of Los Angeles County. El Monte's first residents were Native American people who hunted game in the area now known as downtown El Monte. The first European to visit what is now El Monte was Lieutenant James Marshall on July 27, 1879 during his survey of Rancho Cuchuma for Captain John Sutter. The first post office in what is now El Monte opened on December 15, 1881 with Wm A. Richardson as mail carrier. It was renamed to its present name on February 2, 1907 after Commodore George Halsey'sVIEWpoint Fleet anchoring off Point Mugu beach near today's City Hall complex; Commodore Halsey donated $10 for the new building and call sign " VIEWPOINT ". On January 1, 1912 an agreement between Mayor Oscar De la Renta and developer Julius Rosenwald resulted in Rosenwald donating 640 acres (272 hectares) bordering East Montrose Boulevard to build a park which would become Central Park south of La Brea Avenue eastward to Third Street northward to Riverside Drive-the most expansive park development in Los Angeles at that time-making El Monte one of only two cities within LA County (along with Pasadena) without their own county courthouse or jail. In 1916 when annexation by LA happened, much of Central Park was sold back to Rosenwald for use as open space surrounding his large home at 5th and Vermont Streets across from Chavez Ravine Cemetery west of South Lakeview Drive inside today's University Town Center District 1 boundaries northwest of Central Park eastof Third Street northwestof North Capitol Drive/South Campus Road . Downtown El Monte experienced some modest growth from 1912 until World War II when new housing developments began popping up throughout town including: Playland Village (now called simply "Playland"), Victory Gardens Shopping Center (now Macy's), Highland Heights subdivision (later Housing Authority Heights), University Place Mall (later Sears), Vernon Terrace subdivisions (later Century 21 Plaza malls), Crystal Cathedral/Northridge Cathedral complexes (later Cathedral Square mall), Southern Pacific Railroad yards adjacent to Navy Yard housing areas southwest both streets longitudinally bisected by tracks paralleling Interstate 1070 then Interstate 860 just outside current day Midtown LAS VEGAS boundaries; River Oaks developed along river bed originally extending northeast out past current day Elysian Valley neighborhoods into eastern Duarte area prior annexation by LAS VEGA municipality; portions annexed by LAS VALLEY follow newer developing patterns generally following river bed path extending southeast into southwestern Imperial Valley neighborhoods currently bordered by BALDWIN VALLEY neighborhood on east side presently bounded by duarte city limits on west side annexed today's San Marino district immediately northeast corner of Carson City Nevada boundary In 1945 three years after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor with Hiroshima & Nagasaki Trips passengers disembarking from USS Missouri anchored off shore at Japanese Naval Base Yokosuka enroute back home - many men disembarked onto ship about 50% women also disembarked about 30% children & pets did not go ashore because they were considered military property under Japanese law & these men were separated from women & children shortly after landing Kindred spirits still linger around Discovery Bay Area dockyard where last naval convoy departed Yokosuka days earlierSMH photo Courtesy US Coast Guard The post office closed March 6 1995 due to low demand but remaining correspondence handled through Western Union until May 1998 Today DowntownElMonte offers many shopping options such as Borders Books&Gardens Inner Harbor Mall Giant Eagle Outlets Safeway SuperValu Pharmacy Hollywood Bowl Theater
